Driveline freeplay

Wife's 2008 D3 Auto. Seems to be suffering from a driveline freeplay issue. Noticable when stopping, really bad on hill starts when the vehicle has transferred its weight back on the drivetrain. Uni joints seem fine, diffs seem fine. Auto trans fluid looks like new, no fault codes from box, and shifts smoothly.

Any suggestions from the sages who frequent this forum?

How many miles on it?

The carrier bearings wear out on these, and some slack in the u-joints. The result is some vibration/oscillation when going down the road. Also check for grease sling on the body near the front u-joint.

Presently there is on fix, which I did, replace the drive shaft. I've got the old drive shaft, and I am looking into rebuilding it, but have not gotten around to it yet.
