Annand & Thompson front wing plate

Can anyone provide some information regarding the driver's side wing front plate that Annand & Thompson used to supply on their Series 1 wings? The plate looks like this.....

    I'd like to know....

    1) What colour were these plates originally?
    2) Were some Land Rover decals painted yellow (rather than white) on these plates?

In the pic I provide, the plate looks to have been the same green as the vehicle, and the decal painted white, but I had heard that the plates were originally simply plain brushed aluminium....so silver. Can't see how looking at this one.

These plates were for the rego plates in UK && A&T wrote Landrover on them. Mine was white writing & brushed aluminium when I bought it 26 9dd years ago. It also had a plate on the rear also.

Annand & Thompson front wing plate

So they must have been different between vehicles then, do you think Wayne? The plate in my pic above was clearly painted green then painted with the LR logo....and look at this pic below, and in particular, the 86 inch at the front - a little hard to see, but an Annand & Thomson vehicle.... definitely not any brushed aluminium on the driver wing though....

Do you agree? If it were brushed silver coloured, it would be pretty obvious on this pic....

Then look at this......Another Qld vehicle, but no plate at all, just the LR logo painted on the wing....

To add to the mystery, perhaps some were black.....

I certainly can't find any pictures that show the number plate plate as brushed silver, and as I'd like to make one for Matilda (she has the 4 rivet holes where the plate originally was), I'd like to have it finished correctly.

So can anyone add any information to this please?

In the absence of any advice to the contrary then, one might assume that there was no particular standard in regard to this question. Perhaps some plates were simple brushed aluminium, others were painted the same colour as the vehicle, some black, and yet others had no plate at all - simply the Land Rover painted decal.

    Anyone else in the know?

    Can't help

    Dan,

    Hello from Bulawayo.

Interesting stuff there - I was only aware of the yellow decal which they used to fit to a lot of their vehicles.

As far as I understand it the sticker itself was not unique to A&T - you could get it in the UK and USA etc, just for Australia they used to put it on their stock.

    Cheers,

    Neil

To add a little more to the pot.
My 48 A&T car has black plate with yellow writing front and back
My 49 A&T has bare alloy front with yellow writing front and back
A 1950 I broke had bare alloy with yellow front and back however when I removed the front plate it was black on the back and still had some paint dribbles on the opposite side from painting.
Later vehicles were painted straight onto to guard be it with early 86 with black front or later 86/88 with body colour. 107/109's are a different kettle of fish and I haven't done a proper study as of yet.
I have seen yellow as well as white on later 2A's but mostly yellow right up till some of the last vehicles.
Early vehicles were painted on and later vehicles from 1950 were screen printed
When I get a chance I will post some pics.
    Hope this helps
