Freelander 1 200K Service

I'm about to have the 200k service done on my 2001 V6 petrol Freelander 1. The mechanic I use has never done the timing belt on a V6 Freelander, and doesn't know if he needs any special tools to complete the task. Can anyone tell me if special tools are required?. Thanks!

I believe there are special tools involved in this repair. Whether they're actually needed or not, I don't know but I know someone who borrowed them from a dealer so he could do a belt replacement.




Oh, contact Land Rover about your medal too. There's not too many V6 Freelanders which have hit the 200,000km mark!!

There are service tools. You can do them without them. But is not a easy job. I wouldn't recommend just anyone give it a go. You would of wanted to of done quad cam v6 before.
You need to do your own timing marks. Also pulleys need to be removed of the rear of the engine to change the rear belts.
There is 3 belts in total.
Also would change tensioner, idler and water pump.

Thx Woko, much appreciated. The mechanic who did my 100,000km service used to do all the services for the Land Rover dealership in Casino, and although I was there when he did the service, I couldn't remember if he used any special tools or not. I live in Kyogle, and being a small town try and give the work to a local, therefore keeping as much money in the town as possible (small towns are doing it hard at the moment). The guy who does my work has been working on my car for years, and bought the business off his dad who did my work as well, its just that he's never done a timing belt on a freelander b4.

Most of them are sitting in a wrecking yard with blown engines...

I have bought and sold a few of them in the last 2 years and have been going strong even after 200k ... I purchased the special tools for myself as it was cheaper then getting someone to do it for me

I have now done 3 x timing belt changes etc without a hitch ... very easy with the correct tools ... even a good mechanic can stuff it up without the tools if he is not careful as you have to do it in a specific sequence.
