After they received the all-clear to use the stool, it was Duff's husband John that donned plastic gloves and assiduously followed the instructions they found online. He was no doctor, but as a retired submarine commander Duff considered him equal to the task.

Actually animal husbandry scientists have been playing around with this for some years.
They find that cattle introduced to certain pastures, eg. in the tropical North ,tend to do poorly, so they drench them (ie squirt down their throats) with rumen fluid from cattle who are better adapted to the pasture regime.
Basically they're inoculating their gut with a soup of micro-flora that can better utilise the feed the cattle are eating at the time.
I gather they've even played around with using micro-flora from the guts of native animals such as kangaroos, as they are even better adapted to using the native feeds of course.
And we should remember that Rennet, the stuff used to make junket and to coagulate milk in cheese making is also extracted from the rumen!
The Canadians are doing this rumen fluid "transplant" business as well, in dairy cattle for example.
