I don't even drink but I used to love going down to the local to hang out with everyone

Can't beat the atmosphere in a local UK pub

I can't remember the last time I went to a pub. Wait, it must have been before 2002 when I took redundancy from Telstra. I've never really liked pubs. Too many people, too noisy, and, years ago, too many smokers. Is smoking still allowed in pubs?

    British pubs

I've been in Australia 25 years.

The only thing I miss are the pubs and the beer.

There are very few equivalents in Oz to an English Pub and nowadays you can't make money selling beer.
One thing that really annoys me is going into a pub just for a drink and finding every single table laid for food.

There's a pretend "English Pub" between Sydenham & Melton in Victoria, and the last time I tried to have a drink in there I was greeted at the door by a waitress who asked me if she could help me. All I wanted was to walk up to the bar and order a beer - not possible there apparently, you have to be assigned a table!

Holgates in Woodend is superb however - especially the ESB, seved at cellar temperature.

    Cheers

Yeah the ESB at the Holgate brewery is excellent stuff, from a proper old fashioned hand pump/beer engine and, like you said, served at cellar temps so it's cold, but not so bloody cold that you can't taste it!

I spent my 40th in there last year, sat at the bar all night with a few mates, drinking excellent beer, talking **** and putting the world to rights!! Top night and just what a pub is for
