Matching Hubs To Trailer Question

Hi All, we're looking into getting an off-road trailer to compliment our MY13 D90 when we have extra gear on those longer trips. I've read a good tip is to get matched hubs and wheels so you maximise use of your spares, but being pretty ignorant of these things I'm not sure what I'm looking for apart from the 5 studs. What else needs to line up to be able to use the trailer wheels on the D90 and vice-versa?

Same offset and preferably same size tyres(235/85, 265/75 or 255/85 etc).
A standard 90 has +30mm offset on 5 stud 165 landrover pattern.
Unless you have fitted different steel wheels, then the 5 stud 165 pattern is the same , just the offset is different, so maybe +10, zero or neg/-15 or even -25mm. This way you can carry either just 1 or 2 spares which will fit on both the trailer and the D90.

Defenders, Series Landies, Disco 1s and RRCs all have a 5 on 6.5" PCD stud pattern. PCD = Pitch Circle Diameter, i.e. the studs are located on a 6.5" (165.1 mm) diameter circle.

Trailer parts suppliers can supply hubs with the LR stud pattern. Better yet you can fit actual defender hubs and spindles, (as you will get bigger bearings and better parts interchangeability) however most trailer places won't be willing to do this.

You will need to buy a few LR rims, however there are plenty of models to choose from.

Lokka?? Is offering axles to suit spindles/stubs....if you want brakes there is a bit more to it and nearly all shops wouldn't be overly helpful

As other have said it's should be straight forward for any trailer supplier to supply defender PCD although they will come with 5/8th? studs (I think that's the size). You can knock these out and fit 16mm studs so that you runs the same nut all round as well

It might sound a bit complicated but I'd get some 2" steampipe, ( check the scrap yard, local boilermakers etc) And weld a flange on each end, after drilling l that flange the same PCD as a landrover stub axle.and bolt on landy stub axles, they're not very expensive from the wreckers, I bought one once as a spare. ( still got the dam thing somewhere
Some would think that's going too far, but you know you're getting a bulletproof hub/ bearing and stub axle set up. ( can be oil filled). But having the same wheels is a must, it's not too much trouble to carry a spare set of bearings and seals for the trailer.

I had an engineering company make mine out of solid square section, they machined mine after welding to ensue the flanges were square twitch each other.........I think I have mentioned elsewhere Salisbury stubs is the easiest way to go

I have recently converted my CUB Kamperoo to a full sized camper trailer, it originally had 10" wheels. I bought blank hubs from the trailer place and drilled them to suit my spare 16" wheels, the hubs are soft steel so they are easy to drill.

I went to the trouble fitting defender hubs, discs and calipers...... never had a flat or needed the spare hubs
