    Deaf Ender says G'day

    Hi everyone,
Just a quick hello, as a new member, I've been reading some of your posts and appreciate all of the good oil thanks.

I jumped in the deep end recently and bought my first REAL 4 wheel drive, a hard top Perentie, as opposed to my previous pretend 4 wheel drive X-trail. It's a lot of fun and a bit of a learning curve for me, with a couple of mysteries, like why is it so hard to get out of second gear and why does the REVERSE/INDICATOR fuse blow every time I select reverse gear (but only with the engine running)?? Never mind, I'll get to the bottom of it ... maybe with your help?

A few short notes about me .. I like a beer, I am passionate about my Perentie and old aircraft and have had an AP6 Valiant Ute for the past 17 years. I also own a 62 Dodge 575 truck that I intend to rebuild as a long term project. As a young man I spent a couple of years flying around the Kimberlies as a Bush Pilot and also a few months working in the Hammersly's as a water truck driver, but my current job tends to keep me away from the bush and I miss it. Hence the Perentie.

I'll be heading off through the Simpson in about 2 weeks with a few good friends and am looking forward to the adventure.

    Cheers for now
    Deaf Ender.

    Welcome to the forum...
You can post again in the introductions thread too..
As for your blowing fuses, there will probably be a squashed/ worn through wire, the tricky bit will be finding it !!The ADR requires that the reverse light only can come on with the engine running, so power is taken off the oil warning switch wire.
No engine running = no power to the bulbs.
And as for gear selection, make sure you have engine oil, not gearbox oil as it is a gear driven oil pump lubrication type box. Plenty of threads on this forum & just as many opinions. Search LT95 OIL
& Enjoy your trip, hopefully not on those horrible Steeltreks.
    Cheers, David

    Thanks DeeJay,
You have thrown some light on why we only have reversers with the engine running, however I'm also thinking there is a gearbox switch for reverse and am informed that if it's faulty, it can blow the fuse. You probably assumed that I already knew that ... Wrong.
Do you know how to access the gearbox switch? Is it on top of the gearbox? I'm away with work for a few days now, so can't check it out until Tuesday. I'll be looking for your flattened wire all the same.

As for the gearbox oil, we recently replenished it with Mobil Delvac mx15w40 engine oil and added some Molly to it. It's a bit slicker now, but still jams in second, when changing to 3rd or 1st, especially when cold. If I accelerate and change without delay, I'm usually successful.

    Cheers mate

The reverse switch is on top of the gearbox just in front of the gearstick. You may be able to get to it by removing the big rubber boot that covers the gear stick and High/Low lever - I haven't actually tried this way so not sure how accessible it will be.
I had the same problem years ago on my County and It turned out the live prong for the globe in the reverse light was shorting out. I only discovered this by accident when checking the globe. You could easily check for this with the continuity tester (on your multimeter) by attaching it to the wire that runs from the reverse switch to the reverse light. Then if you find it is earthing out, the fun part is finding where the short is. Good luck.
