Gear Knob Button Spring

I had the gear knob button spring break. With this the button was always pressed and didn't need to be pressed to change out of park etc. Here's how I repaired it.
Remove button with screwdriver here.

Here's broken spring (there is a bit missing)

Unclip chrome cover here

Cut a small groove in here to allow spring to sit in and chrome cover to clip back in place.

Fit a compression spring here. and refit chrome cover. It was brought from Bunnings and is a 5/16 x 1-1/4 x 0.041

The next bit is a bit tricky but you will see a piece coming out of the back of the button removed it step 1. Sorry didn't get a photo of this This goes between the spring and the white lever in the knob when refitting button. White lever also has to sit forward when fitting button. Easiest way to keep it forward is with a piece of dowel.

Just a note to say a big thanks for your photos and technique.

My Freelander 2 just had its spring snap and after a few little DIY attempts with what I had around the house, I gave your idea a shot. With a bit of scrimping around to get the spring to stay, so far works a treat.

There were no springs in stock that your specified but I used a slightly shorter version 3/8 x 1-1/8 x 0.41. Seems to work fine although the action does feel a little light.
