    Statins again!

Remember few months ago the program about statins and the controversy that it raised?
Well statins were again in TV, this time in Current Affairs in channel 9.
This time it was more balanced but again it raise "food for thoughts" about them.
My Dr just told me to stop taking Crestor for 2 weeks to see if the muscular pain gone or not.
Blood tests are Ok, but we have to wait and see
I hope that I find an answer because even if I have water only as a diet my cholesterol come up! The liver produce to much

Crestor gave me hell with joint pain... A tablespoon of psyllium husk a day on cereal or as a suspension in orange juice helps reduce (bad) cholesterol... good luck

Tried two variations of 'statins, neither helped with the numbers to any worthwhile degree, whilst giving me some pretty horrendous pains and muscle-wasting...
When I asked my GP the Question... 'If statins are hurting my leg (mainly) and other muscles, and making them weaker... are they damaging my heart ? - which is, I think, mainly made of MUSCLE tissue'...he just looked at me blankly. As though he'd never seen the connection.

You may need more than a fortnight to get the stuff out of your system and muscles being repaired. Took me several weeks for the bulk of pain to go.

Two cans of sardines or kippers per week, plus supplemental fish-oil pills pushed the numbers further towards the Holy Grail than the poisons did.

In fairness to some pharmaceutical companies, who simply respond to "Market Forces", the individuals who preached the need to repent from "Cholesterol" need to be put under the microscope and made to give an answer for the Faith that burns within them - along with their Disciples/True Believers...

After my own experience in sussing out the ignorance of the conventional medical profession regarding Type II 'diabetes', I can't say I'll be easily convinced by the so-called reliable Placebo-controlled, double-blind, peer-reviewed Randomized (drug-company funded...) Gold Standard/definitive Study....

I had problems with statins...joint pain etc

I now take Ezytrol....a non statin cholesterol drug.

I don't really need it but it ensures it is kept under control.....I am type2 diabetic

All diabetics should treat themselves as having cardiovascular illness , because it is the next thing that occurs without control.

I will mention Ezytrol to the Dr to see if that can be an option.
I cannot take fenofibrate (Lypidil) the side effect after few months of taking it are similar to the effects of ADHD
With Crestor I have only pain but there are not signs of muscle-wasting on the blood tests which it can be a very serious side effect.

    Hi superquag
Just interested to hear more about what it was the medical profession is ignorant about, could you elaborate?

Re cholesterol the higher numbers particularly LDL put you at a higher risk for coronary artery disease. Without meds they say the best you can do is give up smoking (if you do) eat a diet low in fats, cholesterol & salts. Exercise for 30 minutes minimum per day & reduce stress. Which also helps with T2 diabetes.

I have the same issue , my liver makes far to much. I have been on special diets, tried several types of drugs both statin and non statin. My blood tests showed my liver function was erratic when using statins and non statins, so the doctors just kept trying different types/strengths.

I seen a heart specialist who did tests on the fat levels in my arteries which he said were good. All this started when I was in my early 20's, and it was originally diagnosed by a eye specialist when 1 of my eyes changed colour.

I am now pushing 50, and 18 months ago they started me on a statin that seemed to have less affect on my liver, but made me feel very lethargic and according to my wife "A GRUMPY OLD MAN". I took myself off them and had a constant headache for over a week , closer to two. It was about 2 weeks later the ABC ran the statins program.

I take fish oil tablets every day and earlier this year is the first time my cholesterol tests have finally achieved a single figure reading ( only just mind you ).

From my experience your body tells you before a doctor if things are not right , so if it don't feel right stop taking it.

    Cheers Ean

    Question

Well, I take three of the medications mentioned here, Lipitor, Fish oil & Psyllium husks, all of which work for me, particularly the fish oil.
Tried all sorts of stuff for joint pain, went to the Doc,..had MRI, went to a specialist, had X rays,....couldn't fix the problem. Then a friend told me about fish oil,....I thought it was an "old womens tale",...after around 3 weeks I started to get relief, wouldn't be without it now,...but the Doc still doesn't wanna know about it (fish oil)?
    Pickles.

    Pickles.
My Dr suggested fish oil for the omega 3 component, but then again the last medical research indicates that men who take extra omega 3 on the top of their diet are 75% more at risk to develop prostate cancer
I guess that at the end for those that have normal liver function (not producing excessive cholesterol) the answer is having a sensible diet.
it does not work for me
