Front Rotors and Pads

Just had the front rotors replaced and new pads fitted at my LR dealership during a minor service, not much change out of $800 bucks for the brakes, the rears i had new pads and the rotors machined before the Cape Trip a month ago and seemed to have hung on for 8K KM's

Anyone prescribe to machining the fronts, i found it a false economy on my previous sport as they used to warp after the first serious heavy right boot to the pedal and you ended up replacing them anyway within a short period of time.. be interested in other peoples experience

I'd have to check for the D4, but in general, most modern vehicles including 4WD's, do not have enough meat on the rotors from new spec, to the stated scrap thickness, to allow machining. A grooved or lipped rotor, will take up to 1mm per side to clean up. In a lot of cases on modern vehicles, there is only 2mm from new to scrap thickness, and they are only intended for replacement not refacing.

As the brake rotors are being replaced in such high volumes now, the cost has tumbled, and certainly for the Holdens and Falcons, new rotors are cheaper than machining anyway. You can get PBR rotors for a D4 ( 2.7 lt ) front for just over $200 each. Not bad considering.

Just picking up my new disc rotors for my D3 today front $130 a pair rear $95 a pair + front and rear pads plus handbrake shoes and front and rear sensors all up under $500. My old rotors have travelled 195,000klms, are now looking pretty worn out. The old ones have never been machined never had a problem with them. With a pending trip I want everything to be up to scratch.

agree admiral, had the rears machined this time (40000 since last replaced) and they seem to be holding, but usually replace as it ends up as a false economy

Parts only, the handbrake shoes were for one set only so had to get another set add $95 now $600

I'm about to replace all my brakes just awaiting parts to arrive $550 all delivered. Went with Brembo front rotors and Ferodo pads all round, Brembos set me back 180 delivered.

Note most of the guys are getting new sensors as well. A good idea, as they go very brittle, and generally cannot be removed let alone refitted without damaging them.

I reckon tinman deserves a round of applause. To get 195000 kms on his rotors is pretty impreasive.
