Sport Mode

I put the D4 in sport mode in the city yesterday and kept it there.
No hard throttle yet,it did seem to go well and the numbers on the average fuel consumption were falling on roads that were 70/80kmh limited despite being in traffic.
Do others use sport and if so when/why all new to this.
I did use the Terrortory Turbo in sport last time in the city,it also made for better economy(it has the same 6 speed auto as the early D4).

Yep, I use it up hills to hold gear longer and on windy roads for the same reason giving smoother acceleration response round the corners and better braking assisted by engine. Similarly down hill it won't change up as early allowing for a bit of brake assist. Also shifts down quicker when braking, I feel.

I must admit I use sport mode quite often, mainly when Im feeling bored driving an auto. I enjoy it too especially on the down shifts..lol

I tried it recently while towing my van.

It is hard to compare fuel usage as I did not drive over the same area in sport and non sport mode but I did get better fuel consumption in S mode.

I will try it again and see. I used s mode with auto.

I used mine in Sport mode in Victoria last year when travelling around the Otways. Definitely an advantage in hilly country. In really steep stuff, particularly on dirt, I go one step further and use the command shift, mainly on steep descents. Came in very handy on a steep, wet dirt track across the centre of Bruny Island, which could have proven "interesting" had I just left it in normal "auto" mode. Wasn't so steep that I had to use HDC though.

We went down one track onto a small beach where HDC was used. SWMBO was worried that we wouldn't get back out of there - the D4 did it easy.

Also handy during 'running in' where you aren't supposed to labour the motor and should vary the speed/revs

I'm probably like tiddy just use it when playing around but living our west and traveling most trips 200kms plus each way and a town of 3000ppl hardly any where to use it haha. I thought it was meant to make it change gears higher revs, I did find it drops down as your slowing down though nice fun. Also use it when going down a steep range on my way to Mackay just to use engine braking by holding it in 2nd or 3rd gear.

But i just ran my engine in the way I would normally drive the car no babying it.

I use sport mode when towing, also use it to and from work on the hilly stuff, knock it over to sport when on downhills, it drops back a gear and you don't need to brake as much, then on the up hill it holds the gear longer, once back to the flat stuff, I go back to normal.

Im with you there Nat, whilst I didn't abuse it, I certainly run it fairly hard over varying speeds and rev range. I remember when we got it, both the dealer & the service guy mentioned not to baby it as you need to ensure both turbo's are made to work so they both run & wear in effectively together.

So I did and it hauls the mail along very well indeed.

I use it in the metro area , and stop start traffic , towing camper in hilly windy roads .
