Parts that have BROKEN while touring

Hi All, just wondering with all the people that have taken their D3/4/RRS remote touring if you could list all the parts that have actually broken while in remote areas.

I am about to build up my stock D3 (petrol) over the next year for remote touring and it would be good to know what actual issues people have run into, as I want to understand what to be careful with and also research how to be able to fix any issues myself.

Any help very appreciated.

(PS On a side note if anyone has some touring gear they no longer need give me a PM, there is a lot on the shopping list atm!)

Not quite sure you want my list, but i'll give you a summary of all the items that have "failed" on my vehicle whilst touring Australia.. (i have an approach now, stay within 200km of a dealership..)

1) Suspension Struts
2) Suspension Compressor
3) Suspension Airlines
4) Turbo's
5) Cooling System - everything pipe's, radiator, etc
6) Turbo pipes
7) BCU Computers
8) Power Steering System
9) Hand Brake Assembly
10) Car Window Mechanisms
11) Gearbox
12) Rear Tailgate Struts
13) Starter Motor
14) Wheel Bearings (front)
15) Bushes etc Front Sway
16) Brake Pedal/Switch
17) MAF Sensors, EGR Valves
18) New Main Battery
19) Multi other computer components
20) Rear Parking Sensors (note: my rear is standard setup only front changed)
21) Windscreen Wipers
22) Multiple batteries in keys? why do they last 6 months?
23) Disc Rotor issues (not brake pads?)
24) Air Suspension sensors and valves
Most of the items above are repeat items, plus there is a heap of "small" things that i didn't list. Plus a few big ones that we are still confirming including possible engine.! I should also note we have ongoing issues with the vehicle that are logged in the car, but unable to find and determine the issues.. So we have lots of open ones..

The funny thing is i carry some hoses, belts and filters (fuel/air) with me, other then the air filter i've not needed any of my spares i carry with me..

This is for my TDV8 RRS Sport, that has been setup for touring.. Thought you might like my current running list... (BTW this has all occurred in the last 12 months)

Actually the caravan park i am in has a couple of D3's currently with one guy about 160K on the clock. He just had the entire engine replaced in it at Gold Coast LR as the engine threw a conrod.. He's not that happy... But he's back on the road, we were sharing our thoughts on everything the other day.

Catsman, for every one person like Firefox who has had a hard time there are a hundred that have had bugger all issues other than what you wouldn't reasonably expect on any late model 4x4 with lots of electronic gizmo's. Plus he has a twin turbo V8 diesel Range Rover Sport, not a petrol D3 so I wouldn't stress about his issues.

I just bought a Petrol D4 and we plan on using it for outback touring as well, it would seem going by people's feedback over many years that there are often fewer issues on petrol engined Disco's then there are on some of the older diesels. Saying that I would be just as happy to do outback travel in our TDV6 D3 which is a great vehicle as well.

By the way keep an eye on the markets section, there are often lots of goodies for sale on there, I just bought a roof rack and cargo barrier for my D3 at a good price, so keep a regular watch out.

I agree although my issues (which is why i stated up front do you really want my list).. I'm in a place with a lemon vehicle. They aren't all like this.. But my wife and I have found it funny that the parts we did carry (as recommended) we've not had to use..

Hi Catsman,

We are just ending our second trip to Oz in our D3 2.7 diesel...in all covering over 50,000 km of outback touring, hi way travel, sand driving, thousands of km's of corrugations, log bridges, river crossings...you name it...apart from an alternator that died we have not had one breakdown either here or in NZ...I ensure we get it serviced every 10,000km and any issues fixed at that time before it becomes an issue...back home in NZ I had the front suspension arms replaced under my extended warranty..(just in case) and the air suspension had a stuck valve at one stage...the front arms seem to be a common problem but can be economically fixed by buying in the complete arms and bushes from the UK if needed.

It is part of the family now...just treat them as such.

We haven't done remote as I would call remote but have certainly done many 1000,s of kms a long way from a mechanic and even further from a L/R dealership. Travelled thru central Australia in summer when high 40's and lots of long highway stretches.


The only part that has failed whilst travelling has been the rear tail gate latch. Luckily we don't have a cargo barrier otherwise it may have been a mission.


I do regularly service the car and have done the trans fluid and transfer box fluid plus the front arms but that wasn't for any other reason than I thought it a good idea to replace them.

The only part that's failed on mine on long distance touring (although not that remote) is a wheel bearing (sure everyone is sick of hearing that haha). Mine is 9 years old, 140km. The list of things I've fixed as maintenance is quite long, but ... it's 9 years old ... and still drives pretty much like when it was new.

Best you dont visit Wait Awhile.You wont even get Albany to Perth,our only dealers in the state
They did give Whyatts in Geraldton factory backed independant repair specialist as there was NO dealerships north of Osborne Park in WA

Oh and I've also broken a few windscreens and lost a mudflap or two over the years.

If my car was like ffgc's I would have it put down.

I have not broken anything touring.....and done lots of highway, dirt roads, and corrugations, trips across Oz, with very little commuting around town.

But off-roading have got a few dings though, destroyed the factory tubes, twisted the bull bar on a launch off a massive sand dune at Bilbunya (got video evidence with the person recording stating "oh ****"), smashed the left hand side of the bull-bar at the W4 challenge, right hand side on a rocky creek (there was an easy way, but that's no fun), tree came up and smashed the drivers door handle off, all mud-flaps destroyed but still hanging on, wife closed the electric front gate while still driving through so left hand mirror got clobbered and a bit of panel damage...and she reversed into a Commonwhore yesterday but polished out today.

Gave her a wash and polish this morning and she looks beautiful again....the wife doesn't need as she always looks beautiful.

I use her for what she was built for.....and she just keeps getting better.

But then again.....I never seem to have car problems, so "keep it mean" works for me.
