Model changes in Series Landys (generally) is more a matter of evolution rather than revolution. However a couple that come to mind are the steering arms and vent knobs. I am sure the brains trust will be along shortly.

The only difference between the Series 2 and 2a was the introduction of the 2.25 diesel to replace the 2.0. As far as I know, no other changes other than the chassis number suffix happened at the same time.

Changes, including steering arms from top to bottom and vent knobs changing from screw to lever did not happen at this time, but as pop058 says, changes were gradual. Whenever changes accumulated to what the factory thought were significant enough, the chassis number letter suffix changed. Series 2 had no suffix, when a suffix 'A' was added, the Series became 2a, but it remained 2a as the suffix went up through the alphabet (to 'H' from memory) until the Series 3 replaced the 2a.

Series 2 only lasted for three years, but Series 2a lasted for ten, so there were a lot more changes in the life of the 2a than during the life of the 2.

Is this also when the petrol engine changed crankshaft journal diameter?

They were related - the petrol engine had some changes to have more common parts with the new diesel, but I do not know that they happened at the same time, although it would have been about the same time.
