A Roll cage is a must for defenders

A roll cage has always been on my list of "must have" but the price is very prohibitive.

On that premise all cars need cages then.
Go to a few car rollovers and you will see any that roll with roof impact have similar or worse damage. A lot depends on the type of roll, Multiple roof impacts are the worst. Often high speed result in barrel rolling without the roof hitting the ground every time and often fair better than a slow single roll or roof landing.

I think all SUV's (I'd just like to go on record in saying I hate the term "SUV") in general need to be built with a stronger roof structure in general due to the increased risk they have of rolling over. A simple "mine spec" roll hoop may very well have limited the amount the roof crushed down onto my head and possibly prevented my spinal fractures. Anyway, some good came from it - if I didn't have that crash I'd still be driving around in a Tojo and not a D3

Looking at the 90 I wonder if it had a cargo barrier in it ?
I reckon the only thing worse than rolling a defender would be rolling a wet cardboard box ! or maybe a Moke

Never rolled the Moke, but had a Roll Bar, wasted money

Putting a Cargo Barrier in the Defender, apparently it helps a bit.

If i went down the cage path, i would try to get an integrated roof rack and take the stress off the roof. I imagine they are out there somewhere.

I wonder if Perentie soft tops are any "safer", given their standard Roll over protection systems.

Not that any unintended roll over could ever be safe. I remember in my youth (way back), cracking my head on the B pillar during an unexpected fishtail in a Falcon (yeah, i was young and adventurous aka foolish). No serious damage but a bit of a headache and possibly knocked some sense into me.

Back on topic, many Perenties have had theur ROPS drilled through for the roof rack to be refitted, which is not an ideal solution. I wonder how much this compromises the strength of the roll bar.

Actually most of the Defender rolls I have seen have faired as well if not better than most 4x4s and cars.
And a roll over is much safer than a head on.

I have to admit being shocked at the lack of strength in the roof of the classic rangie when I did the head lining. It's one of the reasons why we bought the p38 - it's a lot stronger.

The newer 4wds are definately a lot better, the territory and l405 I've seen rolled and they've faired exceptionally well.

If you think defenders are scary don't buy a rolux,I've yet to see one that didn't have the roof pushed down to dash height. Pat
