Hi Gareth,
I had a similar thing with my Comp 100" on a Carnet a few years ago. Fees will be based on Carnet figures, plus, plus.... Let us know how much, cause I was in for bit of a shock! m
Morning chaps,
The time has come. We just put in for our 189 perm residency visa so it is time to start looking at getting the truck and trailer registered. They are both all ready here on our Carnet so i'm just looking to get them off that and into Aus on a personal import.
The questions I have are firstly, hands up who has been through this process with either a vehicle or (more worrying to me) a sankey trailer?
Secondly, does anyone know the cost of this? The customs website isn't very helpful basically saying it is customs value + GST + I assume fees.
So I am filling out the VIA forms online now and crossing my fingers. Carnet expires on the 15th November! Time to get cracking
All help appreciated.
Gareth

I have a Sankey narrow track trailer for my lightweight, but when it was imported the then owner (he brought in 1 x Lightweight and 6 Sankeys) , Customs listed them as "Offroad Trailers" and duties were $2500+.
So I would suggest that when listing it, list it as Second Hand, and you should find it's original MOD rego number on the L/H front chassis member and quote any previous British civilian Rego.
Just call them a 1/2 ton box trailer.
cheers
Thanks guys. I'm bringing them in on personal import. Trailer will be listed as used.
Best start working harder then if fees are going to be that much!
However a new Carnet will see me out-laying $5000 in November anyway.
Either of you guys know how long the process will take? VIA is 20 or so days but do customs drag their heals?

I am not sure if the personnal import status changes the level of taxes but sure the AUS Gov wants to prevent private imports en-gross. Did you require a permit to bring the car into AUS on a permanent base? I had the permit very quick despite being LHD and the whole permit and custom process took less than a month.
Interested to hear how you go as I have another car waiting back overseas.

Its here on a Carnet de Passage at the moment, so I have only paid for that. No other permits etc were required. The issue with the CDP is that it is only valid for 12 months. I am going to put in for an extension incase I need it.
Interesting about your process only taking 1 month. If I can get the VIA and customs through in 1 month I will be very happy. I can then take my time getting the vehicle and trailer up to scratch for roadworthy etc.

But what was the value on the carnet? I was always lucky to get commercial/trade carnet last time. No deposit and only an insurance fee.m

Truck is 3000GBP and trailer is 200GBP - we have paid the insurance fee but this is quite high through the RAC in the UK.
No problem, I guess we will see what happens! I have applied for a Carnet extension so if the worst comes to the worst hopefully I can get that.

I would check with Customs and Dotars and ask what is required.
