Rear Diff Center Removal

Following my rear axle saga:

I need to remove the rear diff centre.


Any tips?


I have a couple of dodgy vertebrae so I have to be cautious. Sideways lifting is out. I was thinking of easing it off onto a board on my well padded gut.


It looks horribly over-engineered! Will disembowel myself?

There is a flat face on the diff centre with a couple of tapped holes (usually full up with dirt) I've often wondered if these were for fitting/removal. Maybe bolt it to a plate which than mounts on a jack.
Probably just a convenient way of holding them while setting up the backlash etc.

The gut method sounds good, you will need to get the car to the right height to be able to slide under it.


The nuts holding the diff centre may be whitworth if you have trouble getting a socket to fit.

Now! I HOPE I can get a thin screw driver between the planetary gear to knock out the broken axle stub.

I'm impressed with your little cradle for removing and lowering the diff, whatever the state of the welds.

When I pulled mine out, I just reefed it out on top of me, screaming "Auuuuurrrrgggghhhhhh!".

Mind you, that works as well.
