    D4 3.0 twin turbo fix

As far as I can gather, the early models had issues with turbo oil drain pipes. This can happen even if the scheduled maintenance has been strictly followed. If out of warranty, it's expensive to repair and can lead to catastrophic problems.

Was there a point in time when this was fixed from factory?

The problem has nothing to do with service schedules and it doesn't lead to any expensive repairs or catastrophic problems. All that is required is for the direct drain to be fitted instead of the original drain via the scavanger pump, although it may take some driving to clean out any residual oil in the intake system. The kit costs around $200 plus fitting - it took me about 4 hours.

IIRC the direct drain was fitted to MY13 models.

Good info, thanks Graeme. Do you have a part number for the kit? And any idea on the VIN range that benefits from the change?

My 3 litre Sport is now showing signs of blue smoke under heavy right foot pull away, which i believe was a symptom of the oil drain issue on the twin turbo's. Interesting enough it only started showing itself post the Turbo actuator being replaced. I am going to drop it off to Northern Beaches Land Rover to see if they will do the work under warranty..its under Allianz extended, but i was wondering if anyone has the TSB number and whether this should be covered de facto by Land Rover as a design problem??

Here's the TSB noting that it could have been superceded.
    Turbo drain pipe.pdf

I was about to embark on making a warranty claim notwithstanding that my D4 was out of warranty as an earlier attempt had been made to stop the smoke by replacing the turbo, but found it much cheaper for me to buy and fit the kit myself.

The kit cost me $163 in Aug last year although possibly at a discounted price arranged by the service manager who probably preferred that he didn't spend the time arguing on my behalf with LR and then do the job probably taking more time than LR would reimburse.

Thanks Graeme. So the TSB states it's for the TDV6. Therefore I assume it does NOT apply to the SDV6, correct? I'm still getting my head around the differences between the 2 engines...

hrm, ok. I thought there was a potential fault with the 3.0 that could destroy turbos followed by the motor.

    Better keep reading, huh....

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I was of the understanding that the TDV6 and SDV6 in D4 2010 onwards vehicles are BOTH 3.0 litre engines. If this is the case, my question would still appear to be valid...

I'm not sure when the SDV6 badging started but think it was with MY12 and if so then SDV6 is included, ie any 3.0 / 2 turbo engine that wasn't fitted ex factory with the direct drain for the secondary turbo.
