    NEW DISCOVERY TDV6

    Hi,

Traded in my V8 Q7 for a Fuji white Disco4. It certainly takes a bit of time to get used to, but overall, a big step up in terms of comfort, driviability and fuel efficenicy.

Howerver, one minor thing I notice is that all the buttons inside the cabin does not illuminate in different colour to inform you if the door has been locked or not, particiluarly with the park brake. Has this been like this for all LR model? Another thing I am still puzzling in my mind is that should I be considering the extended warranty with a ticket price of 4k? What would be the common repair bill for this beast?

Glad to be part of the LR family and looking forward to a club ride.

Welcome to the club. I have often wondered how the D4 compares with the Audi.

You're correct - the buttons do not illuminate to show status - but you can see everything on the dash.

If any door in the D4 is not properly closed (including the tailgate), it will show up in the warning panel on the dash. Try selecting "drive" with the engine running while any door is still open and you'll soon hear and see the warning. Similarly, the park brake will show a red light on the dash when activated, & light goes out when park brake is released.

The doors will all automatically lock when you drive off (I think it's when you exceed 10km/hr).
    Cheers .........

The key question about the value of extended warranty can only be answered through your own appetite for risk. I have signed contracts on a new D4 TDV6, same I expect as yours but Blue:-)

I have a five year lease and therefore the extended warranty was not a difficult choice for me. I couldn't imagine having to continue paying finance for a car I don't even own and have bug repair bill.

I have owned four LRs but only one form new. These are nicely built and built to last, but they are now so high tech that if they go wrong they are going to cost you.

You should get some competitive quotes because $4k sounds a little high for just two years, it usually is about $1k per year for a late model. And premium very depending on the level of cover and excess. Also check out the limitations if you plan on vey high kms per year as some limit the cover to 200,000 ams, which should only be an issue for an older car or a true road warrior doing 40,000 ams per year.

If you own the car out right, or will after year 3, then the risk is different and one might be prepared to bank (or save) $1k per year which would still not get you a new engine.

I think $4k is way to high for just two years.

    Cheers, Tony

Only when sold to people that live in Kal

Welcome to the forum and Disco club!! You will probably find the D4 a nicer car than the Q7 vastly more storage and practicality although the Audis are great the Discos just seem to do everything perfectly!!

As for the lights you get used to it and the park brake does light up on the dash as does the cruise control and various other things.

I haven't bothered with the extended warranty as i dont keep my cars long enough so depending on how long you plan on keeping it is weather its of value or not.

I think what discofans means is the lock button lights a different colour when the car is locked from inside. Standard colour when open, yellow when locked. It just makes it easier to see when driving if you have locked the door. Same with the handbrake, lights up yellow when it's on.

I have had 3 AUDIs one being a sport coupe with DSG , another 2L turbo charged A4 and also the Q7 that I traded in. I have had all sort of mechanical and electronic problems from DSG died at year 5, excessive engine oil consumption requiring a rebuild at year 4. Both of them would cost upwards of 7-8K but thankfully with good service history records, I managed to make a claim under the Audi "GOODWIN" program putting it into a "special" warranty claim.

Do you hear that kind of story at LR? Are they generous and considerate in negotiating repair bills?

I'd get them to flex on the warranty price- everything as part of the deal is negotiable. I didn't take out the extended warranty at point of sale and found it hard to get any interest from the sales people to sell aftermarket when the warranty was up plus the price by that stage was firm.

Looking at the $4k cost now it seems like a bargain!
At 86000 km got told ABS system had a leak and caused secondary damage. Body off job to replace all at $8-10k. Before that had spent $1600 on new ride height compressor, $1500 on lower front control arm assembly ( this was fine till 60,000km but a long outback tour about 20,000km / 80% dirt took its toll ). There was also the brake switch replacement needed to solve a transmission fault and the premium nav / radio was on the fritz needing either a software upgrade ( I doubt this ) , new head unit or ECU, also been getting a battery power drain.
Upshot was I traded the car due to ABS issue but had fitted bull bar, winch and snorkel before the trip - new car bit still lost these but do consider worthwhile for the adventure we had.
If you plan to keep past the end of the factory warranty it's a no brainer given what can go wrong. I had 2 other LR's - D3, Sport which like the D4 were all fine in the first 3 years of ownership asides from small things like a battery or bushings.
Re: LR being sympathetic the most they have been able to help so far is with free diagnostics and reduced labour on the compressor install. For the rest it's all from your back pocket!

On the warranty, since mine ran out two and a half years ago I have had to replace a compressor and an alternator, that's probably about $3k with labor. The alternator also took out a new battery with it worth $500 but I don't know if the extended wArranty would have covered that

I have just reached break even on the extended warranty and I have a few months to go.
