Jate rings install on front of 13MY defender with factory fitted steering guard

    Hi guys,

Just installed two standard width Jate rings to the front of my 110 with the factory fitted steering guard.

Needed some serious muscle to wedge (bend) the steering guard out enough to fit them in, but managed to get it done in the end with some screwdrivers, a block of wood and a mallet!

Much better than the other options of either removing/replacing the steering guard or installling the other bumper mounted recovery points which requires holes to be drilled in the bumper.

The rear is much easier - simply replace the factory fitted tie down points. All of 5 minutes.

Hate to break it to you but they make jate rings wide enough to go on the outside of that steering guard arm. No bending required.

    (Not that it really matters)

Yeah I've seen the wider ones, however only after I'd purchased these hence the need to fit them.

My understanding is that factory fitted steering guard is new to this model defender

These jate rings were locally supplied which saved me ordering from the UK.

Not much bending required anyway as the Jate rings were about 10mm wide

They look ok to me, what was the cost like and where did you source them?

The only point I can see that could be improved, is that the bolts need to be replaced with some that have a longer shank, doing this the locking nut would have a proper grip on the thread.

    Tugga,

Those ridiculous "steering guards" have been fitted to 90's, 110's and Defenders since day one... (1983)

They are as much use as a chocolate kettle to be honest and the first thing replaced by Mantec when they built the Camel Trophy vehicles.

You'll do well to find a replacement that work with the jate rings though. I prefer the Mantec one, but recently I've been impressed the APT one and a number of vendors on here sell them.

    Cheers,

    Lou

    Mmmmmmm delicious

I have also been very impressed with the APT steering guard and I think I will be sourcing one of those for Agnes in the very near future.

Well someone has clearly been feeding me dodgey information. The Jate rings were specified for suitable for front or rear.

May eventually update the steering guard. I take it has at least one impact in it.

The jate rings were $130 for the pair from 4wd industries in maitland. They have a website of the same name.
