I work at the greyhound track at Sandown. Have heard them practicing through the week and wondered what was racing!
Any one else at Sandown ,just about to watch a formula 5000 race.

I was there yesterday. Best racing going around I reckon. So many different categories to watch.
Been hearing them all weekend like I was there !!
I just checked Google Earth & its 5.34 klm away too...
haha,,, was a great day yesterday.
I was there with Chris & Sandy (Rangieman), Leeanne and her daughter and her boyfriend,, well, at least for a little while, the kids took off after about two hours or so.
Lots of very old, very fast cars, although the Fords were doing very well through various races, the last race we watched had what was probably the fastest "car" of the day in it, a Chevy Camaro,, wow, what a beast.
They had a run of the F5000, damn they were quick, and loud. Just awesome to watch in action.
Unfortunately, no pics from me. Batteries were flat, and the charger was broken
We didn't go today as we were at the truck show up at Yarra Glen,, and no,,, no pics today either at this point, still have to try and get them off my phone

Sandown is not far from us, I knew it was on, & thought about going, but other things cropped up.
However, I have been before, on a few occasions. A GREAT atmosphere, the competitors actually ENCOURAGE you to get up close & personal with them AND their cars, a bit different than V8 Supercars (it has to be).
I remember at a Historic meeting at Phillip Island, & I was talking to Win Percy, (World famous, & also ex HRT Team Manager & driver) who was driving a multi million dollar D Type Jaguar at this meeting. Whilst signing something for me, he casually rested the document on the D Type bonnet to sign it! When I expressed my surprise, his words were, "Martin, it's only a car"!
Historics are great, & so is the atmosphere, which you have to experience, to know what I mean.
Pickles.
Too true Pickles,,,
As you say, they let and even encourage you to get involved.
I've even found the "show car" guys that are there seem to be friendlier than most. Very easy to talk to them, and they're also willing to give up info, ie, explaining pitfalls etc of restoring etc, prices and the like.
It's amazing just how original these race cars have to be kept,, nothing's allowed to be improved in any way,, even safety wise
It's also cool to see just how many are road registered,, the really old ones that is. Must cost a fortune in upkeep, which is probably why they don't have a lot of meets through the year.
Not even sure if there's prize money involved,, I think it's just a prestige/honour/recognition thing.
I almost always go to Winton and this was my first at Sandown for this event, only thing i missed was the bikes and sidecar events.
Winton is a bit better as a spectator as you can place yourself anywhere around the track.
