    I watched that segment the other day - was incredibly interesting - I would like to find a copy of the Back of Beyond video.

    I cracked up over this bit:

    Both Heyer and Farwell quote Birdsville policeman Sergeant McDonald's laconic entry into the police journal of 1888.

    It says "January 22. Thomas Turner appears to be out of his mind. Sub-Inspector Sharpe shot himself on the police station verandah this afternoon. Another hot day."

    Tom was a great character. Had a couple of opportunities to spend a few hours with him chatting over a few pints...

    Each time the stories came thick and fast...

    A tough guy with a great heart and a love of the outback and its people.
