Fuel Leak

Hi all,

My 2009 110 wagon sprung a leak this morning, I was filling up and all off a sudden I noticed fuel on on the ground, it was p!!ssing out, I also have the rear arch aux tank, I noticed at around 92L in as it, I have checked the hoses between the aux tank and the main tank and they seem fine, the leak appears to be coming from the top of the main tank.

It leaked all the way home and stopped about 10 min ago in my drive way, I would say that it has now fallen below the level of the leak and there there is no more gravity feed from the aux. I would estimate I have lost around 10l of fuel.

My question is, is there a common place for it to leak badly on the top of the main tank? I am not sure how much fuel could free flow out the breather but the rate is was coming out at the fuel station seems to point to a bigger hole, but I do not know. If it is just going to be a hose and clip or something simple I would prefer to do it, if the tank has to come out then I will need to book it in, also is it dangerous if I just fill it with around 70L at a time and run it till i can get it booked in somewhere?

My tank (which is different to yours) had the sender unit, suction & return pipe at the top. I had a leak in both pipes. Tank out to do a repair. The suction pipe had broken away from the mounting plate and return had a kink/split at the bend.

You might also have a split in the breather hose, or it might have come lose. There is likely to be a t piece somewhere in the breather hose so it connects to both tanks. The hose clamp may be lose.

I managed to have a feel around and a look with a torch, it is tight but I can't feel anything loose or disconnected at the breather pipe end of the tank, I can see the pipe leave the tank and it joins the axillary tank, the small breather pipe with the filter on it is feeds up the side of the big breather pipe and is tied to the side of the aux tank, there is no sign of fuel from this, from the passenger side I can see what seems to be fuel in the valley of the tank were the sender sits, but the pipes look dry.. going back out to have a look later and I will give it a shake, that seems enough to get the fuel to leak.

OK found it!!

rar110 you were correct, it is leaking at the T piece on the breather pipe where the small pipe joins in. I have attached a photo (borrowed from this site) and pointing to the leak.

When I give the car a good rock it pours out of this, it definitely looks like the tank needs to come out unless i find someone with really small hands and long arms.

Does anyone know if the rear floor panel unscrews? I know the middle and front do but can't see any screws on the rear.

On a side note, I have decided that those $3 led torches with the 9 led are rubbish, the light is shocking and seems to have no directional distance if that make sense. They are fine for getting back to the tent after a few beers but that's it..

I got the small hands but unfortunately the arms match....(been fighting with my fuel system for a good 4 months...... Buggers of things to track down probs in ...?had to fuel pump out old pump in thismorning)

The cargo area floor on my 110 is riveted. Removing or loosening the tank enough to gain access is not too difficult for a rear tank. A good opportunity to check mounting rubbers if you've travelled some corrugated roads.

I'll bet you could drill the floor, cutting it before the middle seat rear mount. Then rivnut it back in.... No small job; but you'd always have access.

Bugger! Mine just started doing exactly the same thing after filling to the top this arvo.
Parked it in the carport with a bowl underneath to catch what I could and it stopped after a while. I then took off the filler cap and it started gushing out again. Must have released the vacuum and started it off again.
I've let it flow and have captured about 25 litres and can just see the bottom of the auxiliary tank so not much more to come out.
What sort of job is it to remove the tank and fix it? I've a RAV CD somewhere but can't find it........
