D3 "Check Brake Pads" reset - how?

Some sage advice please. Does it need some kind of electronic reset or is a sensor stuffed?
Yesterday the orange dash light comes on and the message centre tells me to check brake pads. This morning I replaced all pads (front and back, discs are fine) but warning light stays on, as does the message. The rear sensor looked like it has been the one "rubbing" but didn't look unusual?
So, is a new sensor the only way to reset the warning lamp? (Other than shorting the sensor wiring which I don't want to do)
    Cheers, Matti

Once the sensor has been 'activated' it's stuffed sorry.
Need to replace it with a new one.
Worst part is removing the inner guard.
