Series gearbox question

I've got a SIII gearbox (suffix C) that's abit noisy in 1-2-3and quiet in 4. Probably Lay shaft bearing worn.
I've got a SIIA gearbox & T/Case already to bolt in.
The SIII box came off a project that had a LR V8 mated to a series gearbox (I don't understand why). As a result the primary pinion has been machined down to suit the V8. I've overcome this by fitting a bronze bush (or similar - the type that you soak in oil o/night and they become bearing-like).
I would like to retain the simplicity of the SIII clutch mechanism. [size=24]Can I use the 2A box and fit the SIII clutch mechanism without changing to a SIII primary pinion?
The SIII box jumps out of 2nd on over-ride (engine braking) so I figure it's better to have all gears with no synchro in the lower ones, than have synchro and jump out of gear. I'm also told the SII/A boxes were stronger than the SIII.

The motor's been done up and there's an overdrive, so this Landy will get to 120kph (on the flat on a cold morning) so the stronger gearbox seems a better choice than repairing the SIII box. Also allows a quicker change over (hopefully same day)

Hi

Lucky you! Don't quite understand the question, but the bell housing, with all the associated clutch bits from the S3 box will fit the S2A box, I believe.
But you'll need to replace the crankshaft spigot bearing with the correct one for the S2A input shaft.

I asked around, most people thought it could be done,

but the layshaft on the 2A has a nut at the front, the SIII has a bolt. The nut will not allow the front housing (the one inside the bell housing where the thrust bearing mounts) to mate up.

There goes a days work.

Now to decide whether to repair the SIII box or fit the SIIA with the older clutch.

Either way, I'll need to feed it some money. :x :x :x

Learn from my mistakes, it's cheaper than making your own.
