    Wheel Cylinder Question

    Hi All,

So the other week whilst trying to bleed the brakes it was discovered that I had a faulty wheel cylinder.

Anyway - I purchased another one (this time not ****part) and it arrived at work on Friday:

Note that the new one is still in the plastic bag (top of the picture)

The wheel cylinder is for a Series 2, SWB, drivers side front...

I notice that on the new unit the hole for the brake line is on the RHS of the picture, but on the other unit - it is on the LHS.

That would mean that when the flexible brake line is connected it would point towards the rear of the car, but for the old unit it would point to the front of the car..

Question: Does this matter? Which one is correct? Have I been supplied with the wrong part?

Hi GG, according to my parts manual there are a front left and front right wheel cylinder listed. You may have been supplied the wrong cylinder. From my experience the difference would most likely be the position of the brake pipe connection. Manual also states rears have different part No. too for left and right.
Hope this helps, (in some way).

    Cheers Rod

It looks like the wrong side mate. Was it a local purchase or OS? I'm sure they would replace it, but it may cost you postage...

Out of interest, what was wrong with the first one ?

Britpart outsource most of their parts. Difficult to tell but the one in the bag looks remarkably similar to the one that failed. I remember a certain shop in Blackburn used to take parts out of the blue packaging before selling them.

The better ones (for example TRW) are more expensive. Personally I haven't had a problem with the Britpart brake cylinders but I always strip them, clean, then reassemble using rubber grease.

I hope the supplier swaps the part over for you without too much trouble.....

    Hi Colin,

The brand new part - the faulty one - had pin holes (3 or 4) in the casting of the actual body. So when we tried to bleed the brakes, there was weeping from this pin holes!

I can't actually remember where I bought the 4 x replacement wheel cylinders from because I often buy parts in advance, when funds allow. I do remember the brand - which I also have used in the past without problem.

I spoke to the Australian supplier this morning - they went out back and checked all of their stock. Much to their surprise "all of the boxes marked LHS have RHS cylinders in them, and all of the boxes marked RHS have LHS cylinders in them"

A replacement unit should arrive tomorrow - so all sorted.

I do still wonder though - as it is the flexible brake line that connects into the wheel cylinder, would it really make a difference? I suppose the Land Rover engineers designed it that way, so best to be safe than sorry when it comes to brakes!
