    Snorkel... or no snorkel...

    This is a gratuitous question!

    I am mulling fitting my Mantec Snorkel! It is colour coded to match the black roof, sawtooth alloys etc. But is it too much?

    I am not used to seeing my truck without one and now with a 'dry fit', is looks quite dominating! Is this me???

    Thoughts on a post card!!!

    Hi they do have a practical side , the ones that come to mind are , nice and high collecting cooler air , less dust . Then if you cross water , then less chance of sucking It in the low side vent . I think they look good as well . I like the Mantec but they are at the top end price wise !!.. Jim

    I personally prefer the Mantec shape/look than the Safari - again just personal preference.

    When I installed the Mantec on mine defender, I also thought it was a bit 'dominating'. However, after a week I no longer noticed it (my defender is a darker colour than yours - so it might blend in a bit more).

    Mine Mantec is, however, the normal matt black - not the fancy closs black of yours

    That is very shiny and flash, but I have to agree with the guys that one week later you won't "see" it anymore.

    If your car is a city run-about I wouldn't bother, but if you ever intend to travel on dirt roads, especially in multi-car convoys, they are a must.

    As a RAI they work fine, but keep in mind that the Tdci's internal pipework is as much use as a chocolate kettle. Push together fittings without any way to secure or lock them in place.

    If you ever intend for it to function as a snorkel you'll need to buy Nugget's reworked plumbing kit from the market section of the forum.

    In conjunction with Nuggets plumbing, you get a nice gurgly intake noise , so it sounds better !

    And after 3 weeks i dont even notice it.
    By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

    Well, it's fitted now! Looks good actually!

    Indeed I will be getting 'Nuggets' intake fitted... looking at the 'push to fit' narrow plastic intake tells me the induction will be compromised by that.

    BTW, the Mantec is an easy fit... jus another mental leap of faith drilling another two, 9mm holes in the body!!! OMG!!!

    I will take and post a picky tomorrow.

    Do you have a copy of the instructions or do you know if they are available online. This is a job on my to do list in time and I like to plan the hole drilling a long way in advance so I can get over the nerves of screwing it up. Alternatively a pic of the holes would be good.

    Its easy to fit mate!

    1: Assemble the snorkel, i.e., put the top bit on the tube! 4 bolts.

    2: Attach the metal plate (that will be used to hold the snorkel against the windscreen frame) with the 3 screws provided.

    3: Attach the metal intake 'clamp' to the bottom of the snorkel. 5 bolts.

    4: Stick on the foam gasket over that clamp.

    5: Remove the existing intake cover.

    6: 'Dry fit' the snorkel, the metal 'clamp' you have fitted has 2 'claws' that tightly locate the base of the snorkel to the body. The BIG thing here is to make sure you have pushed down hard so the 'claws' are fully seated... (The first time I did this, it was still about 1cm from being fully seated)

    7 : Insert a small marker pen through the 2 holes at intake level to mark where you will drill the 9mm holes for the riv-nuts!

    8: Also then mark on the drivers side windscreen post where the 2 holes will be drilled for the clamp fitted earlier

    9: Remove the snorkel.

    10: Drill the two 9mm holes where you have marked and two 5mm holes for the windscreen post.

    11. Install the riv-nuts using a tool or the 'riv-nut' install trick on the 'sticky post' here on that subject!

    12. Repeat the installation procedure as in '6' above. Hopefully all your holes will have lined up! Insert the bolts and tighten, after you have also aligned the snorkel clamp to the windscreen post. (put some sealant on those 2 bolts to stop water ingress into the windscreen post!)

    13. Stand back and admire!

    Follow up post!

    Discovered 2 hidden benefits after fitting the MANTEC snorkel!

    1: Engine intake noise is massively reduced... Nice!

    2: I can drive with the drivers window fully down now and get zero wind buffeting! I think the design of the pipe funnels the air very smoothly between the snorkel and the windscreen!

    Very pleased with it!

    I had a Safari fitted today, and I also noticed that there isn't as much wind buffeting in my window.
    Didn't notice engine noise though, I had Dark Side of the Moon on rotation today...
