    Burning gas smell

    Hi everyone
Recently took a brand new 110 on a jaunt into far west QLD and started it up one morning to immediately have a VERY strong gas or burning plastic smell fill the cabin and engine bay. Emptied everything from the vehicle but was definetly not from camping gas . Took it into the local mechanics (was out at Stonehenge , Sth of Longreach 1.5 hrs) and they couldn't locate the smell either though they thought the air con.
Have done a further 2000kms with no issues but was disconcerting.
I've looked at the fuses and couldn't immediately see anything obvious

    Any ideas?

    Ta
    Nick

Inspect very carefully for any loose parts of all of the heavy current cables, wiggle, pull and poke all of the joints at both ends of where the cable is attached, doing both the power and earth leads and also pay attention to the possibility that one of the joints may be bolted down on a painted surface, the starting current could be then tracking through a light duty wire and this will cause a lot of heat in that wire and it's joint.

Again, the mounting surface for the earth lead joints should be carefully looked at and if you are not sure, disassemble and shine back to bare metal. Before bolting back together I would put a slight smear of Vaseline petroleum jelly on the bare metal to stop corrosion and then paint over the completed joint with some chassis paint to finish the job.

Are sure its not just the exhaust you're smelling? I don't know how familiar you are with engines but modern common rail diesel exhaust smells nothing like diesels used too. It smells a lot more like exhaust from an LPG engine.

    Hi Nick,
I think I know the smell. My puma did it very occasionally on starting. One time I actually saw visible smoke coming out from under the steering wheel / dash. It didn't make a lot of sense cause there's no high current cables under there but the best I could figure was some arcing in the key ignition. As I say tho it doesn't make sense cause there shouldn't be anything with a big enough fuse to let that happen from under the dash. It definitely did it tho.
Sorry I can't help any further than that tho.
    Chris
