2.2 Puma Oil Filter

Hi All,

Ill be changing the oil every 10kkm on my 2015 90, but want to change the oil filter at 5kkm, as it is very small(certainly compared to my previous TD42 Patrol) and I'm planning on keeping the car for a long time(in time ill look at setting up a by pass filter for the oil, but thats a different story).

Does anyone know if the oil filter is flooded when the engine is not running ? IE, can i replace it and just have to deal with the oil thats in the filter, or will more oil come out behind the filter ?

You're right about the small size of the filter, but the puma engine should be a lot cleaner running engine, especially with the low sulphur diesel we get now.
IMO, if you really care about looking after the engine, get a remap that permanently closes the EGR valve. I disconnected mine from day dot (im putting up with the check engine light for now), now just ticked over 4000km and the oil is still incredibly clean for a diesel. Im planning to change the oil in the next week or so.

Didn't really answer your question though. The anti-drainback valve in the filter will hold oil up in the galleries, so yes you'll get a little bit run back out when you take it off. More importantly, its a vertical mounted filter, so nice and easy to prime the new one with oil before screwing it on.

Thanks Beery, can you tell us a bit more about the EGR valve, what closing it does, how does it affect engine running?

It stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. An emissions control device.
Abomination of an idea.

It feeds exhaust gas back into the intake manifold. The idea is to make less oxygen available for combustion to prevent oxides of nitrogen forming.

Put simply, EGR ruins engines, increases fuel consumption, increases particulate emissions, the soot chokes up the intake manifold and ports and contaminates the oil.

But hey, it means the engine will produce slightly cleaner exhaust, for a while, until the warranty runs out. After that, the manufacturer doesnt care how long the engine lasts.

Thanks, how did you disconnect yours? Is it easy to re connect for dealer service? Any noticeable difference in performance?

Ill grab a filter and throw it on and yes, very easy to change.

Also interested in how you disconnect the EGT and what effect it has on performance.

This is what the valve on the 2.2 puma looks like.

Its mounted towards the back of the engine on the passenger side. The yellow cap is where the electrical connector goes. You just need a flat blade screwdriver to release it.

I find the difference in performance is more noticable after I've had it disconnected for a period of time and then reconnect it (i.e. taking for a visit to the dealer). The engine will feel sluggish and out of sorts.

I wouldn't recommend unplugging it as a long term solution, but more a temporary fix til you can get a remap done.

In time I plan to physically remove all the EGR components and use the coolant hoses to plumb in a 240v forced circulation block heater. But thats after the warranty has run out.

I bypassed the cooler so the water no longer flows through it and have unplugged my EGR. It is booked in to get the new map so i can get rid of the engine check light next week.

The best thing is that the fuel economy since disconnecting the EGR has been getting better and better.
Improved 70km per tank of fuel.
now getting 650Km out of my 110 at 10.6lt/100km.

Too true Azza, I've got a 130 with a steel tray, tare weight 2250kg, only 4000km on the clock and last tank I got 10.95L/100km. Not bad on a brand new engine and considering the aerodynamics and permanent 4wd. EGR is evil!
