If you are going to use a trailer with a lunette, you need to ensure that it is a rotating one and you shouldn't be using a fixed pintle with a fixed lunette at the same time when driving off road.
The 12 pin NATO socket has the pins individually soldered to the wires, so yes it is a single unit going back to the connector near the chassis side rails. If you slide off the rubber cover from the back of the socket and lubricate the housing, you can then push the entire pin holder out the back of the external housing.
You can also push out each of the pins with wires attached.
Your other option is to sell the entire assembly to someone who wants to restore the plug to a military vehicle that has lost its one.
