Removing Pintle and trailer socket

So my next adventure in making my Perentie more useable is to
replace the Pintel and socket.

I've sourced this for the pintle replacement.
Just sprayed the bolts on the current pintle with RP7, hopefully they'll be loose by the weekend to undo.

Is there anything special you need to do to take it off? or is it just the 4 bolts through the frame?

Next question is replacing the socket. I unscrewed the existing one and found that after taking the plate off, it appears to be a single unit all the way back to the wiring harness. You can't unscrew the back of it to access the wires.
Not a big deal as I can just cut them off.
Has anyone found a socket that will just screw into the existing holes in the chassis? and that will look the part (metal not plastic etc)
I can't seem to find anything.
- or better yet, can you buy a NATO plug anywhere? Then I can just wire in a standard 9 pin socket to that and keep the existing socket fitting.



As a side note, found that the chassis rail where the pintle and rear lights bolt into is completely filled with mud. Looks like I'm going to have to take all the lights out when I remove the pintle and give it a good spray with the pressure cleaner to get it out.

If you are going to use a trailer with a lunette, you need to ensure that it is a rotating one and you shouldn't be using a fixed pintle with a fixed lunette at the same time when driving off road.

The 12 pin NATO socket has the pins individually soldered to the wires, so yes it is a single unit going back to the connector near the chassis side rails. If you slide off the rubber cover from the back of the socket and lubricate the housing, you can then push the entire pin holder out the back of the external housing.

You can also push out each of the pins with wires attached.

Your other option is to sell the entire assembly to someone who wants to restore the plug to a military vehicle that has lost its one.

Have provided you the wiring code for the socket should you desire to install a civilian socket.

Yep.
They occasionally come up on ebay (uk and us as well) as well as REMLR and here. I have a few. One is spare (if you want to pay what I paid for it) and the other Gav has borrowed to do just as you describe.

Lotz-a-Landies - I'll just be using a normal trailer hitch. Went with the combo hitch to keep the pintle/military look.

No you can remove the rubber pin holder from inside the one piece metal housing, which includes the round casing and the square flange.

If you unscrew the retaining collar, you'll see what I mean.

So that dark green collar just in front of where the wires go in the back unscrews?

Yes, unscrew that, the rubber mounting inside is wider at the rear than it is at the front. A little Inox spray, grease, Vaseline or dishwashing liquid will assist it slip out when pushed from the front face.
