Oils From Brisbane

Hi Guys,
I hope you don't take offense at this, quite honestly I think if you do you should just get over it and stop the stupid nobody knows better than LR drivers, honestly.

Well as far as oils go, the toyota surf users forum seem to have heaps on oils.

I never got that impression when I first got onto this site. Eloquent, helpful and full of useful information, regardless of the type of 4wd, is how I can describe fellow owners. Simularly the Vict Pajero 4wd site.
We never stop learning!

The sites that crack me up are the Holden owners and enthusiasts, interposed with information are the swear words, with no attempt made to disguise their thoughts, no xxxxyyyysss.

Reminds me of a joke I heard years ago,
How can you tell the difference between an autographed rugby ball and an autographed league ball?
The league ball is the one with all the 'x's ' on it, the rugby ball has Shakespearean quotes, lines of prose with the legible autographs.

Hello hatchy, thanks for the info. Just a quick point, tho. We do get over it, in a Land Rover! I suppose if you think we're a bit precious, well that's me.
Landys don't come form the same manufacturers as some who make whitegoods and sewing machines.

you will notice that the castrol oil recommendations are magnatec for just about any car you type in.....


i always use penrite oils in all my cars.....

and they have developed an oil for the TD5 which is HPR diesel 5
(what i have been using)

while at greame coopers a couple of weeks ago i noticed the same oil on his shelf...he uses it in the TD5s and he is a land rover expert....

as for castrol oils....i lost faith in them years ago when we used to use it in the jaguars....they were losing oil pressure...till we switched to shell oils.

if you read on the castrol containers it states "castrol oils aint oils"

i cant say if they have changed or improved their products in the last ten years or not....but i will stick to penrite for my TD5....it meets the recommended european specs and higher....

Well, I don't claim to be an expert on oils, but a little research shows that:

is a pretty lowly specified (CF) mixed fleet mineral oil that is justifiably at the cheaper end of the market. Fine for older Japenese diesels, but you could (and should) do far better for a Euro diesel. The better oils are rated at least CH or even CI nowadays.

If you really wanted an efl/total oil, then something like the synthetic based RUBIA TIR 8600 would be a better bet, but I doubt that would come in at $66 for 20 litres.

just had a look at general chatter and lo and behold there is another post by Mr Hatchy, who incidently doesn't own a 4wd and has a predisposition for the toyota Surf.
Have a read of his post and you'll understand what i mean.
That would explain his '... nobody knows better than L/R owners...' comment.

Guys, For what it is worth I have been using a product called Roil in my TD5 since new and have it in diffs, gearboxes and upper engine.
I checked it out and regardless of synthetic or mineral it makes the vehicle do it easier.
Scania were having trouble with gearboxes being tight on new vehicles and used Roil with success.
Tested by QUT Brisbane and killed the opposition in performance once added to any oil.

Just a couple of points Defenderzook...

1. Magnatec has been released only approx. 5 years.
2. Oils are changing everyday in their specs as well as engine types & their ability to cope.
3. Penrite HPR Diesel 5 is a bit hard to find where I am...if you know of a supplier that would be great. I have tried them all...Autobarn, Supercheap, Repco, Auto Parts Galore....do not stock.
4. Castrol recommends Magnatec...If you do not trust Castrol, which other brand would you trust!!!
5. Magnatec price is much better than anything. $24 - $27 per 5 litres. I have looked for other brands and costs are $39 - $45 per 5 litres.

Let's run a poll with all the recommended oils from the different suppliers and see which oil is being used in a Td5. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif[/img]
