Does this explain the backlash?
G'day guys,
Sorry for the bad photo, but don't know how to actually remove the gear so i took a photo with it in situ.
http://www.aulro.com/modules.php'set_album...=view_photo.php
I have a lot of backlash in the drive train and was wondering if this much wear in the output gear would explain it or whether i'm likely to have issues with my drive flanges etc. etc as well.
Does this much wear mean i have to have the input and output gears replaced or can i just replace the output gear now and wait to replace the other half when it requires a rebuild? If i just replace the output gear, will it reduce any backlash or will it be a waste of time?
I suppose what i'm asking is - what do you guys recommend i do after seeing the condition of the gear?
(By the way, the car has done 130k.)[img]

Is it just the light or is that spline in the centre chipped ?
Mine's a different vehicle however most of what I'm finding at the moment is the axle/hub members were very worn causing the freeplay (60ยบ of free turn at the diff pinion 8O ) with a definitive "KLUNK" between drive and overrun. Backing out of the driveway was beginning to become an experience first thing of a cold morning in 2WD.
Since tightening up the backlash in the diff, new axles and hub members much of the freeplay has been removed (pinion can moved a matchhead thickness if that). I'm now working through the gearbox and am finding most of the freeplay is worn thrusts rather than gear assembilies.
Hope this gives you ideas where to look. Find it unusual for a pair of gears to wear that fast unless they were very soft, ie mismade.
Good luck 8)

WOW The custard your running in the trasfer case scares me the most!
Hellspawn is right, an accumilation on smaller backlashes car add up to a bigger problem. I'm still trying to get my head around the colour of the oil.
I'd be checkin out all your transfer case bearings and thrust washers.
I seem to remember someone else on this forumn recently had some noises from their t/case and turned out it was their bearings, which eventually callapsed an he had to buy a new t/case.
Try taking your prop off and isolating weather it's box related or diff related.

Most polite way I guess to describe the fluid colour.

Thats work, but nothing like My Fender Camila when i got her.
Gear was worn to 50% and shaft about 30% worn.
I replaced only the gear and is still clunks but not bad.
As for the Oil colour... Has it been swimming???
That looks alot like water in the oil.
it should be nice and brown/black.
I dumped the oil in mine when i did the gear and it had not been changed for 40k and was still brown/black/gold colour.
That much wear is very little, change the gear with a cross drilled one and when it is stuffed again do the rebuild... could be 100k futher before you need to get excited...

G'day, I was the one with the stuffed box. I had a lot of backlash in my box. Was worried about the input gear/ output shaft also. I had no wear at all in the input gear, and a little on the output shaft.
Seriously, it's like driving a car now, not a large 4WD, I thought it was normal to have a bit of backlash. Not as much as I had but a bit.
This thread shows what died in mine, good diagram and all. Obviously you have your TC out so it should be easy enough to pull down and have a look at it all. It's not a difficult job, and not too expensive to do yourself.
