    What offset?

    Chasing a bit of info from any guys running 285/75-16's on a defender. (Td5110) what offset rim and what lift?

    Neg 25 on 16 x 8 rims is what you need.

    -25 offset will need aftermarket flares

    Lift is not necessary (and if you only lift the coils does not help fit larger tyres anyway)

    I see your running 35's. Are they also fitted to neg25 16x8's?
    Also please excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by lift doesn't make room for bigger wheels? Admittedly this is my first defender but every fourby
    I have had in the past has required lifting to stop bigger wheels scrubbing. (Usually the front mud flap)

    Planning on fitting "jungle" flares when I change the rubber.

    My main aim is to gain some diff clearance but I'm also wondering how much of the already mediocre steering lock will be lost with the 285's.

    A spring lift makes the car sit higher, but the tyre still tucks up into the guards when the suspension compresses. (Edit - otherwise the spring lift has not been done properly and is limiting travel or springs are binding and the mounts will crack in time)
    So as far as helping fit bigger tyres the ways to stop the tyres rubbing when they tuck into the guards are bump stop extension, body lift or guard modification.
    But for the tyre size you are talking you should only need the flares. The aftermarket flares will be necessary because the -25 rims will have the tyres poking out from under the guards (police magnet)

    Yes im on 35's and yes 16x8 -25 rims. But under a discovery 1 so a different beast.

    In theory that is correct but if you consider that most aftermarket lifted springs have more coils it will also mean more metal that will compress less than long soft springs, a set of bump stop spacers will prevent most of the uplift.

    If the coils bind before it hits the bumpstops it hasnt been done properly (by the manufacturer)
    My 2"lift hits the bump stops before the coils bind. I chose softer coils, but their firmer coils are the same.

    The point is that fitting longer coils is not a good way to fit bigger tyres as you are either going to damage the mounts, the tyres will still scrub or the coils are too stiff and you are losing suspension travel - in this respect bump stop extensions are not a good solution either but better in the long run than coil bind.
