Being an oiled filter i would use them, a donaldson pre cleaner would be better.

In the relentless pursuit for more accessories for the Defender, thinking about one of these, for off road use only, ( the droopy sock one).
Any experiences, esp with a Mantec snorkel.

By all means get a Defender. If you get a good one, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher.

What are the pros and cons of a Donaldson filter?
Bearing in mind both are pre cleaners, and anything is better than nothing, they have their own merits. Weight, filtration, restriction of air flow, ease of cleaning. I like ease of storage for the uni filter, I can stow and forget in the drawer. Oh and price

I reckon these are totally unnecessary unless you are doing a lot of close convoy driving. I had a donaldson precleaner on a self-made snorkel on my old Rangie; we did a 16000km trip that included anne beadell hwy, tanami track, gibb river road etc and on return there was less than 1mm of dust in the precleaner bowl. I have seen them full of dust on tractors doing harvest operations where there are other machines in close proximity all making a lot of dust, but I think on a 4wd you are better with something that improves airflow.
I have a set of Uni filter socks. In the relentless pursuit for more accessories for the Defender, thinking about one of these, for off road use only, ( the droopy sock one).
I used them on my RRC for a trip around Oz but only on dirt. they last about 3 days until they start to become blocked, if say following a B double or on dusty roads.
They come in a pack of three.
I also used them on my Disco TD5 with good results.
In both cases, when I arrived back home the filters in both cars were clean and serviceable for an indefinite further period. BTW you don't have a MAF problem as the main filter stops any oil migrating to the MAF.
This is in contrast to a bloke in a D2 who I met at Charney Station on the GRR who wandered across to me with a completely blocked filter wondering where he could buy a new one! LOL.
The socks are designed for a 3inch snorkel , and the RRC fiberglass snorkel was too big , so I cut up a beer can and glued it inside so that the sock would not fall down into the hole. Where there is a will there is a way.
