What vehicle? N/A or turbo? What colour smoke? What have you changed recently? When was the last service?

Just some questions to help others answer your question as I'm not entirely up to speed on diesel fuel pumps. But, I would have thought that it would be an injector problem rather then amount of fuel being sent form the pump?

How is the timing set on these things? Belt, gears or what?

the EMEI says white smoke is too much oil in the engine or worn components.
Black smoke is overfuelling/clogged air filter/faulty injector/restricted air through the muffler or bad timing.

    <edit> maybe valve clearances??

if its Gray smoke, then keep an eye on your oil and water consumption.

if it black smoke, then clean your air filter and then think about backing off you fuel pressure, screw.

do not muck about with your timing its never going to change ( gear driven)

do that first then report back

do the clearances every 50 - 150 000 klms, and then that's being fussy
