    Question Fuel gauge issue

My 2002 defender has developed an issue with the fuel gauge reading.
Sometimes when I turn on the ignition the reading is incorrect, usually lower.
This has been gradually getting worse but doesn't happen every time and when it does read correctly from startup it stays that way.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

A common problem is earths on the gauges Paul. They vibrate loose and give inconsistent readings like you are getting. Check them all as they are interconnected.

    Thanks for that,
so would the earth in question be at the pump end or the gauge end?

    Or both?

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Could be either, but more likely at the gauge end. Try switching the instrument lights on and off (remembering to wait for the gauge to change - response is slow) - if this affects the reading, it is certainly at the gauge end. Usually also affects the temperature gauge, but this depends on exactly where the loose connection is.
