New props and lots of oil leaks

    hi all,

off for a long weekend of bush camping up in the Palmer Goldfields and decided I would fit my new propshafts before I go....

remove the front prop off the diff and a cup of oil spills out, then remove off the transfer and another cup of oil...

not too bad i think, can deal with new seals tomorrow. got confident when i removed the rear prop off the diff and it was all dry...that was until i removed the prop of the rear output and at least 2 cups worth of oil poured out!! aghh oh well, she's done two trips up Cape York and I'm fairly certain at least one of the props was original ('57) so first task in the morning is to find some new seals rovers....gotta love them

Seal might be fine sounds like leaking down the splines.
I use Permatex No 3 Aviation sealant.

    Feeling a drip.

Get one of those felt seals like the ones that are used on the splines of the driving members fitted to the front axle, they will work at stopping the oil coming along the spline of the drive flange.

well I found all the seals i needed in the shed and fitted them the day before we left for camping. I did cheat on the front diff seal as the nut was tight as h"*l so i put some silicone around the prop face and hey presto...no more leaks.

Interesting...I went to top up the front diff oil and upon removing the filler plug a few cups of oil gushed out. have never overfilled it via the diff but assume that my topping up the swivel oil has overfilled the whole lot???

all said and done, the old girl did three hours (each way) over rough tracks without ever missing a beat and only a couple of drops of oil on the ground after sitting in the campsite for the four days.

    another lovely Rover outing
