Anyone use TireRack in the States

Hi Folks.

Curious if anyone has gone through the process of buying tires using TireRack or the like in the States. I am looking for Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Adventure with Kevlar tires in size 255/60 R 19. I have a 2014 RRS with current OEM tires at 235/65 R 19. The stock Pirellis are the only tire available in that size, I'll be lucky to get 30,000km out of them. 255/55 R 19 are too low in the profile for me.

So I am interested in what pitfalls might await for the unwary trying to import from the US from those who have had some experience.

I used them a fair while ago for tyres for my D4 and my Merc sedan.... but only for a couple of tyres when I had an unexpected need ... read sidewall damage on each car.

Pretty straight forward transaction via email if I remember rightly. Very quick service .... literally a few days from the US to my doorstep.

However, this was when the Aussie $ was at parity with the US $. Freight costs were quite high but the savings made up for it.

The way the Aussie dollar is now you'd have to do your sums. There are some total value taxation pit falls as well, I believe. I remember somebody on this forum stating $1000 .... but you'd have to check.

Thanks Celtoid. I should have said, but the tires I am wanting are not sold here. I think a few have had them imported but I can't find any sold through a dealer. Hence the need to import.

I have, a while ago also. Very easy to deal with and quick shippers. The only thing notable is that when I dealt with them, they needed payment via direct deposit, not credit card. This was due to privacy laws I think they said and problems with people not paying from Australia. It didn't present any problems for me though. I'd use them again if the dollar hadn't died in the butt.

Have you considered going up to 20" rims and using 275/55R20 which are available locally in a few different brands? They're nearly 32" dia though, up from your standard 31". Quite a few 2014 RRS owners have fitted this size. Also, 285/50R20 are almost identical dia as your originals.

I got that that was probably the issue.


So, if you are willing to take the hit on the US $ to AUS $ transaction, the freight cost and any other importation cost, then there is no issue. My experience and others will indicate that Tirerack are stand-up, honest guys.

But with exchange rates now I doubt you'd get a better deal than you could find locally if you shopped around.

The freight change from a charge for a set of 4 to virtually the same charge per tyre stopped me from buying a 2nd set from them. However if no other way to get the tyres then you pay what you have to.

Tyres are duty free under a concession if you go the os route, so just the gst they will slog you.

Mmmmm, have just recieved a quote from Tirerack. 5 tires at $231.75 USD ea with $687 shipping, add the gst and Bobs your uncle, they turn up at $570 AUD each. The standard Pirellis are $355 each on special from tyresales. Need to see of the GOE rims will fit.
