    Wheel Bearings

    Hi all,
Last Saturday afternoon I was in the 2008 TDV6 D3 on my way to the airport to pick up my sister-in-law and at 110km/h on the M2 I started to hear some noises from the left front.
Stopped got towed off the motorway and left the car in a car park. I had to much to do over the weekend and finally got it towed to the repairer on Monday. Tow truck driver said the noises in particular a drumming sound was probably a wheel bearing.
Full marks to him, The left front was gone and the right was on the way out.
All fixed now and the car is back to its old self.
The question is how long should they last? I got 190,000 km out of them which I feel is probably not too bad.
The other question is what about the rears, apparently that is a much bigger job?
    Cheers
    Mike

Longevity depends on where you drive it Mike, if you do alot of mud, sand and dirt, chances are they will fail sooner than expected, the front end bits on these vehicles will fail long be before the rears, because of the forces applied to it, braking, cornering etc...

Also age would play a part in the failure too.

Not something you want to happen on important days mate, eh..
    Cheers Baz.

No it was the proverbial pain. Irony is that the car was parked up on the weekend in an office car park on Delhi Road, directly opposite Macquarie Park Cemetery, the same cemetery where she wants to rest.

    Life of Wheel bearings

I managed to get 307,000k's out of all my wheel bearings.
Drove it 1650k's to city for a service (never heard or noticed anything untoward).
When I came to collect my car, my service person had replaced all 4 wheels at same time as he felt they had all failed at once.
What added insult to injury was being charged better than Genuine LR dealer prices for aftermarket hubs and bearings. hmmmm.

That's not acceptable I would never go back to someone who did that. The appropriate etiquette is to give you a call for anything outside of the normal service items and get verbal approval. Should also give you the choice of genuine or non genuine.

For reference, mine were replaced on my D3 at the 132,000km service.
