Jaguar Land Rover Pioneers ?Just Dance??Style, Gesture Vehicle Unlocking

It often feels like the auto industry is running short on genuine problems it needs to engineer solutions for, but here's one that we actually like: a recently filed patent application from Jaguar Land Rover for an automatic tailgate release that 'reads? a sequence of movements to potentially unlock the vehicle or open the trunk/liftgate.
The application for a U.S. patent is based on an application filed in the U.K. back in 2012 and is, in the manner of such things, written in language as dry as a dehumidified desert, but after reading through it we're hoping that the reality will be similar to one of the ?Just Dance?'style video games; bust your trademark move as you approach and the car will unlock or power open its tailgate for you. Or, as the application puts it: 'the references herein to opening/closing the vehicle opening are to be understood as referring to the opening/closure of the closure member associated with that vehicle opening.? Yes, we think that means 'door.?
You can check out the detailed application yourself here, but the gist seems to be that when you get close to the car it actively tracks your movement pattern and then compares this to a predefined map. Kind of like the gesture control of the new BMW 7-series, but on a grander scale. So you could open the tailgate by sidling up to it and then hopping left, or taking two steps back, or even using a bit of Viennese waltz. This means no need to dig in your pockets for a key fob, or even to do the strange one-foot dance encouraged by those cars that use an under-bumper sensor to open the trunklid or liftgate. Although the patent application only specifically talks about the tailgate?potentially using the rear parking sensors to monitor the zones of this movement map?it could be applied to the whole car; indeed it sounds similar to the predictive powered door opening of the Tesla Model X, although with the extra security of the movement ?key.?
The application goes on for several hundred more words, which we'll spare you, but the fundamental idea seems like a good one to us, and JLR does have an increasingly good track record when it comes to introducing new technology. Let's hope we see this one on the F-Pace.
