    Defender steering

While on on a recent trip to the simpson, the bolt tightening the lower shaft to the universal joint that comes out of power steering box crapped itself. After replacing the bolt the steering has been really loose, I am almost turning the whole wheel when just going round a small bend!
The splines on the lower shaft are really worn so it looks like I need to replace it. I was wondering if anyone knew what other vehicles are compatible with mine-a 1996 defender, as I might call around a few wreckers and find a second hand one. Being a uni student I'm after the cheapest fix!
    Any advice would be great.

    Cheers

Are you sure you haven't stripped the universal joint. I'd check that first.

Re steering boxes, probably any Discovery I or 1986-1995 RR classic 4-bolt box would fit.

    What is your VIN?

How many bolts on the top of the steering box (around the edge). Gemmer 6-bolt steering boxes were used up to JA91938 and Adwest 4-bolt from then on.

The part no. for the Adwest box in the Defender is TC2846 which is the same as the part no. for the Disco 1 and the RR classic.

    Hi Alex,

I know British Auto Parts have one from a 200tdi Defender, it fits the later model 300tdi like mine '96-'97, as I borrowed it while they tried to remove the pitman arm to replace the ball joint, it worked fine for the couple of days I had it on.

They never did get the arm off, busted a Snap On Tool trying, they replaced it on the box, the job cost $95 including part, they lost a $150 tool doing it. I did two cheap tools trying also about $40 bucks each.

Couldn't heat, seals in box would have been cactus.

Their number is 9707 2466 ask for Sam he is very helpfull.

    Cheers
    Bryce
