Diesel: V8 or V6. Which one and why?

Hi,

Now looking for replacement for Discovery TDV6. Always wanted a Range Rover. So been browsing on the Internet. Pricing range means this would be a Range Rover Sport.

My question...as per title....which engine would you pick?

Let's us compare engines and reasons for and against. We can say for this thread that both cars are identical except the engines and relevant to fitting those engines specifications.

what is your price point out of interest? Only asking as 4.4TDV8 with 8 speed Vogue with extended warranty (if you are lucky) can be had for close to $80K these days, even with less than 50K's. The pre MY11 3.6TDV8's ofcourse are much cheaper again.

Depends on your priorities and budget. The 3.6 TDV8 is a lovely folly but it's much thirstier and heavier meaning less range and payload. I haven't driven a 4.4 but on paper they're a much stronger argument on those points.

If you're looking at MY 08/09 then it's between the 3.6L TDV8 and the 2.7L TDV6 rather than the 3.0L V6, which means there's also some potential brake calliper size differences and subsequent rim-size choice considerations - 17 and 18" v 18 and 19" (make a coffee and do a search on that one!).

Re your economy, the 2.7L isn't as economical as the 3.0L but still way better than the TDV8. In our 2010 2.7L D4 I used to get 12L/100 around town and as good as 8.5L/100 on the highway (even with a 7x4 trailer), whereas in the TDV8 RRS we've been getting around 15L/100 and 10.5L/100 respectively (and towing has more of a detrimental effect). It translates to a conservative range in the order of 800 compared to only 600 kms. (NB I have another thread discussing what the heck might have gone wrong recently with the fuel economy on our TDV8, with lots of good thoughts...)

The payload for our TDV8 is about 530kg from memory and I think the 2.7L D4 (which could be more than the RRS even though the tare is about the same) is around 750? Someone will confirm or correct me on that....

All that said, I think the 3.0 is the pick, but there is definitely a price-jump for all the post-2010 facelift models.

I've done a bit of beach and road driving of a new SDV6 D4 to compare it against my 08 RRV 3.6. On the beach the RRV is better but the D4 is close in power & torque as the specs suggest. The RRV just seems to do it easier. On the road I think the RRV is quieter and nicer to drive against the new D4. However the D4/3 shape and rear folding seat design make it better for carrying gear. Fuel economy wise I doubt there would be much difference. My RRV uses about 13.5 around town and about 8 on the HW empty not towing.
