    Gas Mileage (by the numbers)

    I'm sure some are wondering what kind of mileage you can get on gas with our lovely rover V8's? Well here's my numbers, feel free to post yours (for the benefit of others thinking about gas). These are as honest as they come, not keen on fudging economy figures (it's a petrol V8 after all)!

    Vehicle - 2002 P38 Range Rover HSE (4.6L High Compression engine)

    Average conditions and load - Mixed urban and highway, mostly urban with a fair bit of idling. Drawers in the back at around 50kg, loaded up all the time probably takes the weight up to 250kg, plus my tools, so let's say 300kg constant load without occupants.

    Mileage - 95 RON ULP: 16.5L/100km, LPG: 21L/100km

    Costs - $18.88/100km on LPG @ 89.9cpl, $23.93/100km on 95 @ 145cpl, $20.30/100km on 95 @ 125cpl (Last time I filled up on petrol it was still 145cpl but is now around the 125cpl).

    Break even cost - To be spending the same on Petrol as I am on LPG per 100km, I need either of the following to happen: 95RON needs to be 114cpl while LPG remains 89.9cpl OR I need to get my consumption down to 15.35L/100km at current fuel prices. If I took the drawers and gear out of the back it'd likely drop down a bit, but I don't believe it'd be 15.3 that's for sure!

    I guess you could summise that at current prices (given that LPG has not dropped in price in Townsville in the last 8 months - hasn't moved at all actually), the cost difference to drive 1000km is $14.20 in favour of LPG, so to recoup the cost of installing LPG, assuming it was around $4,000 to install, would equate to roughly 280,000km driving on petrol. With that also said, my consumption is an average, say I lived in the country or did a lot of touring (where my consumption often drops to 14L/100km), the figure blows way out.

    I still don't mind the LPG, especially around town, but I'd just put a second tank in next time and stick to petrol only.

    With a 1994 3.9 disco I had 20 l/100k gas/petrol, city/country, heavy/light, light foot/fang it.

    Would be worse with trailer and/or over 120k. 110 on trailer at 130k+ was not good

    90cent/L for LPG .... the stuff is about 56cents a litre down here!

    I agree jcamp, 21L/100km applies regardless of how I drive too! The petrol is easy to manipulate, but the gas doesn't budge!

    We do get ripped off a bit up north hey :-( you're paying nearly half of what we do, that'd be lovely!

    Was around 65c/l here but gradually climbing,saw it at 75.9c/l today

    Strange as petrol prices have been falling.

    And just for the record,my work van,fully loaded, almost on GVM, i think they call it, gets around 400k out of 60 litres on LPG,slightly better on a run,as long as speed is not over 100km/h.

    Not bad,but then again it is a little 4cyl,with liquid injection,so has the latest LPG technology,and it has done almost 250000K with out an issue with the LPG system.

    3.5kays per litre towing the van.
    Thats at 100kph with no thought at all for economy.

    3.5 kays per litre running around the coast unladen.
    3.5 kays per litre running along highway unladen.

    I was getting between 160 to 180 miles from 60l when it worked. Once I got 210 miles from 60l. No idea why that was and it only happened once. I was in the Pyrenees so maybe the high altitude had something to do with it.

    After seeing Keithy figures I'm now thinking of ripping out the tanks and putting a petrol tank back in rather fixing the LPG.

    Hi all,

    My 1984 110 V8 uses 21.5 L/100 km on an easy country run. If i do 100 km/h on the highway it goes above 24 L/100 km. The roof rack added about 1.5 L/100km of LPG used when highway driving.
