    '52 80" Brakes

    hiyas all

    Stripped the wheel cylinders and started casting about for sleeves and OH kits. Perchance did come across RoverParts "Major Brake O/H kit - Series 1-3 ". However, kit specified for for 1954-1980. Using this kit which is very comprehensive (only missing the steel pipes) is very economical and one would be a dill not to.

    Main question is will the 86" stuff fit. ie the hub installations (hydraulic and mechanical). Is it usable on 80" straight out of the box or with minor mods?

    While I'm here, anyone know of a source for 80" chassis mounted steel brake pipes, or do I need to manufacture myself?

    The issue is that before 1954 the brake pipes were 1/4" and fittings BSF, from 1954 the pipes are 3/16" and fittings UNF.

    You can convert the cylinders/pipes to the smaller sizes/fittings but you will have to have an adapter at the point of change. The biggest problem is the fittings on the master cylinder.

    The logical point to change would be the rubber hose for the rear and use a T piece, pipe and fittings in 3/16". For the front, probably change at the rubber hose on the wheels (including using the later spec standard rubber hoses).

    You can donor the T pieces etc off any Series Landy up till about 1979 when the fittings changed to metric. The fittings/tube nuts etc are also available new from specialist brake services.

    Remember, copper or copper nickel (Cuni) pipes are no longer acceptable to most registration authorities in Australia.

    Given that I need to replace the whole lot or overhaul everything; please correct me if I have misinterpreted what you have said.

    Apart from the 1/4 BSF brake pipes, from '54 3/16 pipe and UNF fittings were used; every thing else will fit the backplates. Therefore I can use all post 54 stuff, and all I need to do is replace the steel pipework which I can manufacture in 3/16 dia steel pipe and fit UNF unions.

    If correct, Trific! All the pipework was knackered anyway, all has to be replaced.

    As to the copper nickle pipes available from UK, (good price too) did already demure. though one might get through as "historical" p/n; and once painted and installed????

    Personally replacing all the pipework is a good idea, the place where I can see a problem is at the master cylinder with its banjo fitting etc. If you can find the equivlent off a later S1 you maysolve the problem..

    If you still have the original master cylinder and the casting is intact (the three points on the mounting flange not cracked or broken) it's worthwhile getting is stainless steel sleeved and professionally rebuild. It should then outlast you.

    Hi Rick,

    I've fitted 3/16 brake lines to my 51. I got new pipe nuts from the brake shop when I bought the tube. They fit all the old tee fittings etc including the master cylinder and you don't need extra adapters. They were all in stock. I took the tee's and master cylinder with me so they could see what was needed.
