Noisy alternator bearings

Which way to go? Replace with a new non genuine part or get the bearings fixed (if possible). Has anyone else had any experience with a non genuine alternator good or bad and what brand? For my 1996 4.6 p38 it is the 120A variety.

I had mine replaced along with the internal gear (of which I don't know the name - regulator perhaps? Brushes?) and it was going great guns after 5yrs with me. That was a Thor 4.6, 150amp unit, but I'd assume the same result with yours surely?

My electrical bits were genuine but I am not sure on the bearings.

Be sure it is the alternator and not the idler pulley, I had the noisy bearing sound that resonates into the cabin at and just above idle. Listening around the engine bay it sounds like it is definitely coming from the alternator. Spraying the back of the idler pulley the sound went away for a bit. Common issue, the new idlers can now be purchased all metal instead of plastic.

It was on the list as a potential source of the sound Paul, but putting the blade of a screw driver (carefully) on the pulley bolt and listened. Nice and quiet. As fot the alternator, a constant whiring noise.

A length of say heater hose or similar would be safer ( the mechanics stethoscope.)

I finished up getting the alternator reconditioned. It set me back $190 but i figure with new bearings, brushes and regulator it should be good for a few more years to come. Turn around time was overnight. Nice and quiet again now 😊
