    Daily driver?

    Gday all,

I have been pondering for a while now about my SIII Red 202 109" (still trying to get it on the road) , and the idea I am concerned about is that it may not be suitable as a daily driver, keep in mind I am a carpenter/builder so I will need to tow my trailer regularly. Will the SIII be okay or will I chew up rediculous amounts of fuel and fatigue the vehicle prematurely?

I am looking or anyone else's ideas and experiences/mods to make it capable. I am looking at doing a Cookies disc brake conversion when my pockets are full enough.

Thanks in advance for everyone's input,
    Nathan.

My S3 Stage 1 was used by a chippie as a work truck.
I then used it as a daily drive for a few years.
Landrovers were designed to be worked.

They are designed to be a work vehicle for exactly the sort of thing you are proposing. Certainly, being a petrol engine it will use a lot of fuel if you drive long distances or fast, but there are no other likely problems with it as long as used sensibly. From your point of view, you are most likely to find the major issues are the large turning circle and lack of power steering (I find in the Series Landrover these make backing trailers somewhat more difficult than if I use the 110).

The only other issue is that it is old, but you are addressing this issue to some extent, although it will still require more frequent service intervals than would a modern vehicle.

I bought my s3 original engine 2.25p 109 1974 just over a year ago. Since when I've spent a silly amount of money (to me ) on it and it still surprises me with new problems. I would say, I am a novice , and its entirely likely that I could have made a better go of it now with everything I've learnt since purchase. I don't know what sort of state yours is in - mine was ok structurally but I had heaps of niggling problems with the electrics and the cooling system, I replaced the door tops and bought some new mirrors etc + seatbelts .Now the starters just packed in and it jumps out of gear now and again and I'm going to have to address that at some point soon. I would be nervous of relying on it for work to say the least. But if you have addressed all those sorts of things - get some roadside assist and go for it.
    cheers,
    D
