    Immobilizer gremlin, i think

    I'm looking for some recommendations of places to take my 2010 Defender to have the immobilizer and electrics looked at. Somewhere in Vic would be great, but if there is a Jedi knight of Land Rover electorates I would definitely consider travelling interstate.
    The problem happens every once in a while ( but is becoming a little more frequent ) she will just not start. It goes like this.
    • Unlock.
    • Put key in ignition and turn, nothing happens.
    • Lights on the dash, radio, horn everything works, but the engine does not turn over.
    • Lock and wait about 20min.
    • Unlock.
    • Put key in ignition and turn and then she will start ????????????????????
    There is no pattern to when this will happen, sometimesafter a long drive or after a short drive. Up on the top of Mt Buller and alsoin the CBD. It's happen with both set of keys with new batters in it.
    We are planning to do some remote travel, but just unable to trust the Landy, yet.

    This won't help you, but I have had odd things happen with my MY16 Defender at startup. Probably it's something that I'm responsible for, but not sure yet.

    I've had an occasion when the engine wouldn't start, then I hit the 'lock' function on the remote, then unlock, then it started.

    And also once when I was sitting in the vehicle for some time writing an email, then turned the key to start her up and the alarm went off. Had to wait a few seconds before I could turn it off, then started fine.

    In both cases it's possible I was at fault somehow, or perhaps it was just the extra Defender character.

    When it doesn't work and you're waiting the 20mins have you tried the EKA procedure? The process should be in the handbook and hopefully you've got the code from LR (if you don't then you are not alone ... alot of us didn't!).

    Might at least help with the diagnosis as that bypasses the fob step I believe.

    I had my fob fail on me and my engine was immobilised. Basically it **** itself for no reason at all. The way I got it started to drive was to take an engine fuse out. Turn over the key and it obviously won't start. Put it back in straight away and turn it over and hey presto it started. Had to do that every time I wanted to start it. Went back to dealership to get fixed under warranty. Took me a good 3 hours of playing around to figure it out.

    The passive immobiliser was activated.
    This function in set in the AS10 module and can be disabled with a nanocom or similar.

    Try a resync on the fobs.
    To resync a keyfob , remove the battery in the fob, press both buttons a few time (drains any residual charge), refit the battery. Press the lock button 4 times and then the unlock once, this will resync the fob.

    *The vehicle must be disarmed to perform this procedure.

    It could be that your starter switch is about to go.

    Sometimes it's hit or miss starting, sometimes the radio, lighter socket, and the A/C blower will not work.

    You might like to contact Steve223.
    He had a similar problem, spent a fortune on ECU and other spares; finally diagnosed as the starter switch or relay on switch? Which was quite a cheap repair.

    Thanks to everyone who has replied.
    I did think about the EKA process, but thought it would be quicker and easier to just wait the 20min
    I will try the key fob reset and see how that goes. I will also mention about the started switch when she next going in for a service and see what they say.
