GPS not communication to PC

I have got me GPS. It is a magellen. It may not be the best unit, but it will do me for starting. Just one question though. It will not communicate with my PC via the USB port. All I get is a message that and unknown device failed to install correctly. So it does not seem to be the GPS unit. Does the pc need soome tweaking?
Has anyone every had this problem? It could be me.

did you install the drivers before plugging in the unit?

you many need to delete the unknown device from the list of usb devices and try again.

cables not correctly fitting also regularly cause that error.

it may also be that the usb port doesnt have 500ma available.....

what OS are you running? If win98 or millenium it all gets harder with usb.

Just to expand on Incisors post.

If you are plugging into a usb hub or have a bunch of usb things plugged in you might not be getting enough power. If that is the case pull out all usb things you can and try plugging gps directly to usb port on computer. If it is a power problem you should get a warning window up.

Probably drivers.

Also if you are using a USB to serial adaptor cable you need to plug the cable in by it self first then plug the GPS cable into it then finally the gps to the cable . the problem usually is that XP picks up the cable being plugged in and the NMEA signal coming in from the GPS and thinks its a mouse - that why sometimes your mouse might go crazy....dont ya hate it when that happens.

also OZI exploer has a program called com port detective - this will tell you which com port has been assigned to your GPS USB device - sometimes you will need to tell the program what com port is being used.

Thanks for all the replies

I run windows XP pro on a new portable, plenty of power etc. (It will run autocad)

Voltage not a problem, tried unplugging all things from USB ports.....Same result.

Tried deleting the unknown device.......same result

P.S.

I followed the instructions to the letter. (I read the manual first) 8O

I have mailed magellen to see what the problem might be. It seems that the problem is more on the side of the PC. Might be that it has it's rags on and does not want to talk to anything

It turns out that with the magellen explorer, you can fit the cable on to the GPS unit in two different ways. Both will charge, and communicate with the PC only one will work propery though. Nowhere in the manual does it give a diagram of which way it should be connected.
So with my luck I had it plugged in the wrong way ops: ops: ops:
