D4 and New Home Built Trailer Rust Protection

Taking my new D4 and hand made trailer (not built yet) to Fraser in late August. Just wondering what people recommend for rust protection under their D4s and also if anyone has suggestions about the best coating for a trailer so it will withstand scratches and rubbing and not rust out?

At a bare minimum, there is a car wash in Hervey Bay (if you are accessing the Island from there) which has underbody jets. You can run the car thru this several times to get rid some of the residue. Better than nothing.

There is /was also an underbody wash on the North Shore of Tewantin on the entrance road that can spray the car and trailer with soluble oil pre or post beach.

Warning! it gets all over the car so it is not pretty for a while as a mate with a Honda CRV found out. I usually just get plain water spray.

Any metal not protected WILL rust. I would paint the trailer with zinc rich paint personally, if it is not Galvanised. if Galvanised don't worry.

Spray your trailer seams with light oil. (I use a 50/50 brew of diesel and old engine oil) even wd40 will do. Do it when it's bone dry and saturate all the seams. My box trailer has lived outside for it's 10 year life and has no sign of rust. Repeat the process every 3 or 6 months depending on usage /conditions. Store it in such a way that no water accumulates, IE, it can drain dry.

Metalfix 1000 | Phoenix Paints

I have been using Metalfix for years now, both around the house on projects etc and also at work on crushing plants / conveyor structures etc. Best I've come across by far.

If you have steel that already has some rust in it, use the standard Metalfix and it will stop the rust from getting any worse. If you are looking to coat new steel that has no sign of rust, use Metalfix 1000. Very easy to paint over either product with a finishing coat if you want to.

Rust free at moorooka - they remove all the underbody protection - clean it - dry it then apply a protective coating - initial treatment <$800 retreatment including clean <100 - I'm sure they could do your trailer too - there were camper and in when I got mine done

Yes the ultimate is of course to fill everything with goop.

I had my 91RRC "Endrusted" back in the day when they were still in business.
I never had any rust except a tiny bit in the upper tailgate under the sealing rubber, even with a couple of trips on beaches. The towreceiver got rusty though after Rainbow.
I notice the D2 has more rust protection although in UK the backs fall off.
