Here's a question for V8 owners. How many of you have a viscous coupled fan that doesn't spin freely when the motor is cold? Mine is far from spinning freely, and I thought it might have a bit to do with the fact that on cold nights the temp guage struggles to register anything when on LPG regardless of road speed.

2 things:

1: temp should rise to operating temp if thermostat works.

2: replace viscus unit or fan will break and do lots damge.

other option fit fans from ford el-au they work well.

I have them on my RR holden V8.

Macman, my comments apply to a V8 classic.
The 90 or so onward viscious fan always has a reasonable resistance when cold. You should be able to push it with your index finger or whatever.
This is normal. If they spin they have no fluid. If they are seized they will not turn at all.
They always seem to roar quite a bit at first start up. The theory is that the viscous fluid pools in the bottom while stopped then gets evenly distributed after a minute or so running.
The biggest problem with these units is just either old age or the fan blades crack at the base so its worthwhile to check it regularly. Makes interesting vent holes in the bonnet
