Hiya'll.

I was just browsing a geeky site looking at gadgets and so forth, and came across this interesting trinket:

It's called Swedish FireSteel and apparently it was "Originally developed for the Swedish Department of Defense, Swedish FireSteel is a flash of genius. Its nearly 3,000°C spark makes fire building easy in any weather, at any altitude"

Would be great for starting a fire or BBQ when out camping etc.

Anyone used one, have one, or got anything like it?

Yep got a couple, got one of those and a similar one which works a bit better than that one to be quite honest, they are great for lighting gas barbie`s, heaps easier than matches especially if its windy, but dunno about lighting a fire with em. I think you`d be better off with waterproof matches for something all weather. They give a nice prolonged spark, so they ignite the gas, but its not a prolonged flame like a match which is need to light a fire.

they are also available from camping stores......
i have two different types of those and i still havent used them to start a fire.....i carry lighters.....</span>



<span style="color:green">another little tip.... the waxed fruit boxes availabe in the bins at fruit stores...when cut into small pieces...make a great and inexpensive substitue to fire starters (such as littlle lucifer)

They actually work reasonably well BUT you do need real dry stuff to get the fire burning.

I bought one for my son a couple of years ago at the Rosehill 4WD show and we have used it to start camp fires on trips since, mind you a box of matches is still easier.

Ebay have them for $25 + freight, but the one I have from a camping store was much cheaper than this even though awhile ago & not as flash.
Didn't come in a flash pack just loose, made in the USA though, it works well. Good idea to carry a bit of cotton wool to start fire soaked in some lighter fluid or metho goes straight away.

There the ones "the Aussie survival tool" , they work better than the first ones listed, we have both, and the later definately works better.

They were both given to me as presents by different people, even if they wer&#96;nt given to me, in hindsight, I would probably buy one after using em for lighting a gas barbie.
